For the last 30 years, the GOP platform has been based on the Reagan agenda -— strong military, tax reform, limited govt and support for pro-life issues. Many people who supported Reagan in the 1980`s, people like John McCain, have abandoned the conservative agenda in favor of more moderate policies.

If McCain gets to incorporate his policy agenda and the GOP platform is changed to include his positions on “global warming, immigration, stem cell research and campaign finance”, it will succeed in pushing conservatives further away from McCain.

He’s not that stupid. Sen. McCain will accept a platform that he doesn’t agree with and then simply ignore it when, and very much if, he is elected.
