One of the reasons the Administration went along with the “no WMD in Iraq” is that they didn’t want the bad guys poking around for the remnants of Saddam’s program in Iraq (like the yellowcake in this article). Sadly, it’s a bit late to “rehabilitate” past WMD claims - it’s too fixed in the public imagination (especially Obama supporters). Reminds me of how Eisenhower had to keep his counsel while Presidential Candidate JFK told everyone who’d listen about a non-existent “missile gap” that only Top Secret information (which Ike wasn’t about to release) could have refuted. Sometimes doing the right thing by the country (otherwise known as patriotism) can kill you politically.
