Iran seeking Security Council seat
05 Jul 2008
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has urged unity among the Muslim countries to counter the challenges in the world today.
Mottaki briefed the envoys of 57 Muslim countries to the UN on Iran's policy in a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, IRNA reported.
Iran's top diplomat condemned recent moves in the West to undermine Islamic values and said that these initiatives are intolerable for Muslim nations.
He also urged Muslim countries to support Iran's bid to hold a seat at the UN Security Council and noted that Iran is the only Muslim candidate from Asia eligible to join the UN Secutiry Council this year.
Ten non-permament members of the UN Security Council are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms and are not eligible for immediate re-election.
Iran was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from 1955-1956.
U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad - "``For a country that is under sanctions and is not in compliance with the requirements that the international community has repeatedly asked of it, it is surprising that it would believe that it could become a Security Council member,'' Khalilzad said. ``That would be extraordinarily strange for Iran in the current circumstances.''
How diplomatic of you, Ambassador. (love this guy)
That is hilarious
Iran on the security council would be like John Wayne Gacy with a seat on the Board of Directors for Boys Town.
I rememeber when Mickey Mouse gave Iran the finger - nothing’s changed!
Muslim values belong in Muslim countries. Not here.

Now we know what was in Iran’s private response to Javier Solana of the EU regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Simply put Iran is attempting to become the leader and spokesman for the entire Muslim world, they are demanding a seat on the Security Council and God knows what else in return for a false pledge to halt enriching uranium. We need to place new restrictions on the Iranian government, ones with teeth, ones that will cripple their economy, and if the UN (Chinese and Russians) won’t go along then we have to press all the free countries of the world to follow our lead.
