Obama issues new call for national service

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama promised on Wednesday to create new opportunities for national service that would give Americans a chance to fight growing challenges on issues like poverty, climate change and education.

On a trip to Colorado, which Obama hopes to turn into an election battleground in his November White House race with Republican John McCain, Obama said Americans were ready to answer a new call for national service.

"I won't just ask for your vote as a candidate -- I will ask for your service and your active citizenship when I am president of the United States," Obama said.

"This will not be a call issued in one speech or one program -- this will be a central cause of my presidency," he said. "We will ask Americans to serve. We will create new opportunities for Americans to serve. And we will direct that service to our most pressing national challenges."

Obama, an Illinois senator, touted a package of proposals he first offered in December that would expand AmeriCorps, the domestic service agency, and double the size of the Peace Corps.

He also would offer more service opportunities to retirees and set goals for middle- and high-school students to serve 50 hours a year of public service, and for college students to serve 100 hours a year.

Lets see ... most pressing national issues. War on Terror and homeland security. Ok, sounds like he wants to increase the size of the armed forces.

My late father was in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the depression for awhile before joining the Marine Corps. Back then, people were starving to death and ANY job was a lifeline, but we are now a rich nation with NO need for make-work jobs. Leave it to a socialist to think of this boondoggle...

This sounds like a draft. The “goals” eventually become requirements and we all lose more of our freedom.

Are things like the PeaceCorp government funded/subsidized?
If so, that’s a scary and tyrannical proposition. I consider “national service” CHOOSING to serve your country. I will be an officer in the Army in a few years. No one is forcing or coercing me.

some folks are going to have to spend a little less time volunteering and a little more time working for the bucks to pay for the gas, heating oil, food, and higher taxes Barak will most certainly impose on us.

If these politicians want people to serve more, they’ll have to take some load off their shoulders first.

Agreed. FDR’s civilian programs ran like military operations, with tents and reveille and early morning wake up. That is NOT what civilian positions should be like. There is a reason the military is so segregated from civilian affairs.

Good God! First we had the Peace Corps. That has really been a success. Look at all the peace we now have.

The minute the volunteers get of the great white bird to go home, the people they work with go back to drinking out of mud puddles, providing they haven't dried up.

Next we had America Corps. Clinton's folly. Where is that now? Does it even exist? And did it ever do any good?
