Starbucks should not be allowed to close any of its stores as then the poor baristas will not only be out of work, but will lose their hard-won health-care benefits. I expect Sen. Obama and the rest of the Dems to introduce a coffee tax in order to save these jobs.
That is one very attractive hotel.
It sure does. There are some great places to drink coffee in Central America.
What I would do for some flan and coffee right now...
...starbucks is an abomination.
I'm 55 years old and I can't even stand the smell of coffee or the taste of it in anything.
What God-forsaken town where you live that there is no Starbucks? They are everywhere!
I’m always sincerely sorry when anyone becomes unemployed, but:
1). Where I live, Starbuck’s coffee isn’t as good as the numerous local places that sells it.
2). The employees at the Starbuck’s nearest my home are consistently rude, vs. the local shops, where they are nice and friendly. The last time I went into the local Starbucks, they had everything shut down more than an hour before their closing time, and they didn’t move a muscle when a large group of women came in.
We all left. I don’t know if this sort of thing has hurt their sales, but I doubt it has helped them any. It was the last time I went and I will not be going back.
3). Even if one spends a ridiculous $50.00 a pound for beans, the resulting coffee made at home would come out to around $1.67 per cup if you figured a 30 cups/pound yield, which is on the low side. It is vastly less expensive to make excellent coffee at home than purchase mediocre coffee at Starbuck’s.
4). Having fewer stores is probably their only option at this point, but with gas prices going up, having to drive even further for that $4.00 cup of coffee won’t make it any easier to come out from under their slump.
Me, too. I don’t understand how something that smells so good can taste so bitter and awful.
Because of your post, today I tried a large mug of fresh ground, pressed Bourbon Santos coffee from El Salvador, instead of my usual Yergacheffe. Excellent coffee. $4.25 including a muffin, and the store owner threw in a nice little lecture on Central American coffees for free. Try duplicating that at Starbucks.
There’s three within a four minute walk of my office, but there’s also two independent shops which opened recently, and do much better business (and have better coffee) IMHO. I think there’s a backlash against the ubiquity of Starbucks and the monoculture they promote.
I love strong coffee more than life itself, but Starbucks coffee is one step below crystal meth in my book. It gives me the shakes.
