If the “not well known” is someone like Portman, he would get well known soon enough and would be a smart pick for conservatives.

Portman I've never heard of. Any strictly regional choice is a limiting factor. The choice should have the ability to help nationwide and pull key states. Many regional ones, even well known ones, can't really pull nationally. Very few come to mind, like Romney, that can add much to a national ticket. In both vote getting and fund raising, not including putting his own money where his mouth is if he chooses to do do.
It will not matter much if we get to like Portman later ... there may not be a later with him on the ticket. To beat Obama you have to get the vote out and if the Primaries are an indicator the Dems have that down.
