Your son and your family are in my Prayers—May G-d perform a miracle and bring him home.

There is a foolish attitude of invincibility that is often a part of being young. I would think that feeling coupled with natural youthful exuberance was in part to blame for this tragedy. Prayers going out for both him and his family.

Great Reply—I hope he gets it. I am a senior citizen and I still mess up. Apparently, he has gotten beyond mistakes.

You and me both! I bet we're not alone in that. LOL!

What you are or are not “saddened by” is of no importance to me.

Why is it that when some guy gets killed doing something stupid like going up to fix his TV antenna in a thunderstorm, this board is filled with "Darwin Alert" threads yet when it involves doing something stupid in an amusement park, it is suddenly the world's worst tragedy?

Why are accidents in amusement parks treated more special? With all that heavy machinery putting your body through unnatural motions, it's a wonder that accidents don't happen more often - even without people doing things that are stupid.

Over 40,000 people a year die in automobile accidents. Now that is tragedy. Scaling two fences with danger signs and getting your head taken off by a roller coaster is just plain stupid.

Of course, we will get the kneejerk overreaction and the ride will be closed for months pending an "investigation" and may never reopen unless the fences around it are made higher than the ride itself, electrified, with barbed wire on top and at least 50 security guards posted all around the perimeter to make sure no dumb kids try to scale them or tunnel under them.

I hate amusement parks anyway. Overcrowded, too expensive, and I hate heights. Last time I was dragged to one, I just hung out at the water park section with a John Grisham book and $40 to buy margaritas (which still didn't go all that far). Didn't go on a single ride because I hate them. Just told the kids to have fun and meet me at the water park after they were done waiting in line all day for 90-second rides.

“Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can’t help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime: the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.”

Robert E. Heinlein

Sad for all involved.

Even sadder knowing how avoidable this tragedy was.

Blessed are all the kids who’ve done stupid things and emerged unscathed, myself included.

The very idea of a Darwin Award is reprehensible to me, whatever the circumstances or location of the tragedy. There’s nothing funny about the death of another human being.

We all have a little idiocy in us when we are young. It’s sobering to look back on some of the things we got away with.

You keep saying that “he was seventeen.”
A) You must never have had a 17 year-old.
B) Many people do not lose that personal myth that they are invulnerable and that nothing bad can happen to them until they are in their 20’s. (Some never lose it.) It’s human psychology.

“Must be nice to be like you and never made a mistake.”
Don't be foolish. I have made a ton of them, but I never either willfully or through youthful stupidity disregarded a warning sign or did something so stupid as to risk my life with out thinking.

It IS a shame this lesson had to come at so high a price for the young man. But it proves the uinversal truth that some people are simply to stupid to survive.

“He made a mistake in judgment, a lot of 17 year old boys do that, so he should die.
Typical dumbass remark from a typical dumbass”

I can assure you I am not typical. Also that post has been reported. In future please try to avoid the vulgarity. It shows a weak mind.

What is wrong with folks like you in your little world? Someone screws up and they deserve to die? What a dick.

You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes.

I'll join bigcinbigd in his 'little world'.

This outpouring of emotion (has FR been overrun by the EMO's???) seems rather hypocritical, IMO. If this had been a thread about a 17 year old getting capped while breaking into someone's home, there would be cheers and beers all around.
