WASHINGTON: Barack Obama's political success might claim an unintended victim: affirmative action, a much-debated policy that he supports.
Already weakened by several court rulings and state referendums, affirmative action now confronts a challenge to its very reason for existing. If Americans make a black person the leading contender for president, as nationwide polls suggest, how can racial prejudice be so prevalent and potent that it justifies special efforts to place minorities in coveted jobs and schools?
"The primary rationale for affirmative action is that America is institutionally racist and institutionally sexist," said Ward Connerly, the leader of state-by-state efforts to end what he and others consider policies of reverse discrimination.
"That rationale is undercut in a major way when you look at the success of senator Clinton and senator Obama," Connerly, the founder of American Civil Rights Institute, said.
Other critics of affirmative action agree. "Obama is further evidence that the great majority of Americans reject discrimination, reject prejudice," said Todd Gaziano, a scholar at the conservative Heritage Foundation and a member of the US Commission on Civil Rights.
Supporters of affirmative action say that just because Obama and other minorities have reached the top of their professions does not mean that ordinary blacks, Latinos or women are free from day-to-day biases that deny them equal access to top schools or jobs.
Affirmative action, a term coined in the early 1960s, is a loosely defined set of policies meant to help rectify discrimination based on race, religion, sex or national origin.
The Black Liberation Theologists would say that we still need to make up for the historical oppression of the Black people and we cannot do that over night, by electing one Black man to the highest office in the land. We need to pay for our past sins by reversing the economic dynamics of this country, not just here, but in the world as a whole. The Black Liberationists would say that the US needs to be brought down a peg or two, to experience what it is like to be the under dog.
These frauds should move to Zimbabwe and show old Robert how to do it right.
Of course, they just like to complain and hope for handouts.
ROTFLOL!!
There are so many things to be said about this article I don’t know where to start!
1st: Obama’s campaign is based on race and using it to shield himself from criticism about anything that would disqualify him from earning the job of POTUS. He’s the “affirmative action” poster boy!
2nd: Eliminating affirmative action would be a great thing for black Americans.
3rd: Obama will expand affirmative action if he were to be elected..... gays, transgendered people, and religious groups like Muslims would all get on the affirmative action boat ride.
Communism 101...
Your name was in the Washington Compost today...... it’s so cool to be able to meet a superstar! ;-D
I posted an article on FR on 5/1 titled “Mrs. Grievance,” about Michelle Obama, by Mark Stein in National Review magazine which showed that she was clearly the beneficiary of affirmative action and hated that fact and was outrageously ungrateful and spiteful, despite the gift!
Or should I call you a, FReeper Star!! ;-D
Anyone who thinks the election of Obama would do anything other than increase the demands for quotas (i.e., affirmative action) isn’t in touch with reality.
Only the US Supreme Court can totally eliminate federal affirmative action and right now the court is 4-4 on the issue with Justice Kennedy replacing Justice O’Conner as the swing vote in a 5-4 decision. How he will vote is on a case by case basis. He is firmly on both sides of the issue.
No one case can totally eliminate affirmative action because the protected classes under affirmative action are more than just blacks. There’s women, the disabled, military veterans, senior citizens and other non-white minorities.
You know what Id like to see? Truly fresh blood in Washington: a Victor Davis Hanson/Ward Connerly Presidential ticket .with Hansons first Supreme Court appointment being Thomas Sowell ..Mark Steyn as Press Secretary. Chief of Staff could be Dennis Prager. Secretary of the Interior could be Ted Nuggent .Dennis Miller could be Secretary of Education .Lou Dobbs to head Homelan Security, and just to piss everyone on the planet off, Alan Keyes for Secretary of State.
HEHE ;)
Bingo!
Programs like AA and the “race industry” aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. One reason is because there are too many who have a vested interest politically or economically in fanning the flames for their own self-interest. There is a whole industry whose tentacles reach into every level and in almost every aspect of the affairs of this nation, which has too big a stake to ever publicly admit that in the broad scale, the battle has been won. That’s where “hate crime” legislation and such comes in-inequality has been so well eradicated on a broad level, that in order to continue, they must now begin attempts to “eradicate” it on the most individual basis-—which guarantees for the foreseeable future more business for the race industry, as nothing can ever force every individual to not “hate” (as they interpret it) certain other people. (Like the way they define Christians who consider homosexuality an abomination, even if they don’t hate homosexuals, as “haters”.) This kind of definition, reaching down to the individual level, almost guarantees the future of things like AA.
Another reason is the agenda of those like The Nation of Islam, or subscribers to “Black Liberation Theology”, who aren’t really seeking a level playing field-they’re seeking vengeance, the turning of the tables, a future where app 12% of the population calls the shots for the remainder of the population. That day won’t come anytime soon, so they have “cover” in the meantime for continuing to find excuses to point the finger and trump up “racism” in pursuit of their real goals.
This general concept is the only reason I won’t fall into a deep pit of despair if Obama ends up in the White House. Apart from any specific changes in affirmative action laws and programs that might result, the bigger effect will simply be psychological. The most ruinous leftists in politics, academia, and religious groups have built their empires on an audience which believes the endlessly repeated lie that “minorities” have the deck stacked hopelessly against them, and simply can’t get ahead through hard work and achievement. Even the most ignorant affirmative action beneficiaries in those audiences will know it if we have a black President (even the ones so ignorant that they have no idea who the current President is), and just won’t buy the lie in the unquestioning way they have for the past several decades. The benefits of this will be difficult to spot and quantify, but they’ll be huge.
so once obama gets elected president we will have the half-white half-black house. lol.
Affirmative action should end NOW!
