Throughout the Bush presidency, he toiled in secrecy deep within the White House
Until yesterday.
There he sat, hunched and scowling, at the witness table in front of the House Judiciary Committee: the bearded, burly form of the chief of staff and alter ego to the vice president -- Cheney's Cheney, if you will -- and the man most responsible for building President Bush's notion of an imperial presidency.
David Addington was there under subpoena. And he wasn't happy about it.
Could the president ever be justified in breaking the law? "I'm not going to answer a legal opinion on every imaginable set of facts any human being could think of," Addington growled. Did he consult Congress when interpreting torture laws? "That's irrelevant," he barked. Would it be legal to torture a detainee's child? "I'm not here to render legal advice to your committee," he snarled. "You do have attorneys of your own."
He had the grace of Gollum as he quarreled with his questioners. In response to one of the chairman's questions, he neither looked up nor spoke before finishing a note he was writing to himself.
When Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) questioned his failure to remember conversations about interrogation techniques, he only looked at her and asked: "Is there a question pending, ma'am?" Finally, at the end of the hearing, Addington was asked whether he would meet privately to discuss classified matters. "You have my number," he said. "If you issue a subpoena, we'll go through this again."

Let’s clone this guy. He knows how to handle the bullies.
Wow, I hope this was in the editorial section and not “hard news”./s
I haven’t seen such snarky writing since Reagan.
Saw the exchange between him and Delahunt.
He’s a good man.
So Dana Milbank is displeased when Yoo questions the questioners’ meaning of “implement” but applauds Clinton’s meaning of “is.” Okay, I get it now.
That's Dana Milbank. I read his book "Smashmouth." Snarkiness is his stock-in-trade.
Fixed.
Hey, Dana . . . Truth to Power!
This isn’t even snark, it’s amateurish crap.
Some pretty good lawyer smackdowns here.
“if you issue a subpoena, we’ll go through this again.”
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
go get ‘em mr. addington.
what a pleasure to hear him treat the democrat swine with the contempt they deserve. (contemptible communist revolutionaries)
IMHO
Dana neglects to mention the part of the hearing where Massachusetts Congressman William Delahunt (the one who lied on his election ballot about being a “veteran”)
... snuck into the hearing (he is not on the Committee and did not have permission to speak), tried to grill Addington about “waterboarding”...
and when Addington commented that he could not address some techniques used because al Qaeda (aka “the enemy”, by patriotic Americans) might be watching C-span,
Delahunt commented that he, Delahunt (the “honorable” congressman) was “aware” that al Qaeda watched C=-Span and was GLAD that al Qaeda finally had the chance to see and recognize Cheney’s Chief of Staff who (sneering) “usually had a penchant for being unobstrusive”.
In other words, Delahunt was GLAD that al Qaeda might “see” (and by inference, assassinate) Addington.
Mark Levin, the Great One was all over this last night. Tune in tonight for the sequel as he tries to get the coward Delahunt to come on his show.
Watch Delahunt’s outrageous comments against Mr Addington on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j2uvxsCU_M
An appalling exchange between Addington and Delahunt (D) from MA described here:
Congressman Meant ‘No Ill’ With Al Qaeda Comment to Cheney Aide (Delahunt)

An unadulterated open display of BDS.
Good find bump.
Then the honorable (lower case) congressman from massachusetts will have no problem coming on Mark Levin’ talk show show tonight to explain what he DID mean by saying he was aware that al Qaada watched C+Span and he was “glad” al Qaeda “finally had the chance to see” the usually unobtrusive Mr Addington.
Mark Levin was great last nigt- he commented that liberals like Delahunt, when they slip at the lip, actually reveal their inner feelings- they hate conservative Americans more than they hate terrorists like al Qaeda.
I could tell from the headline that I was going to like him. The article confirms it. No wonder WaPo types don’t like him. He’s a man and he acts like one.
He treated Congress with all the deference it deserves.
Until today, I’d never raed a Dana Millbank column and always assumed that Dana was a prissy, leftist woman. How surprising that Dana is not a woman. I don’t know what else Dana might be but “snarky” is descriptive.
Addington for McPain’s VEEP!!!
