Kansas' 2nd District sees another high-stakes House race

TOPEKA | You know it’s a hot congressional race when even talk of running a clean campaign turns nasty.

That’s what happened when Jim Ryun asked his Republican primary opponent, Kansas Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, to make their contest a polite one. Ryun, the track star who held Kansas’ 2nd District congressional seat for 10 years, said he got no response.

“She doesn’t show any interest in running anything other than a disappointing campaign,” he said last week.

But Jenkins said it is Ryun who disappointed her after outside groups from Washington spent thousands to denounce Jenkins in a round of television ads.

If this pans out the way elections in Kansas have lately then the bitter Republican primary will be followed by the losing candidates supporters either sitting the election out or voting for the Democrat, and Boyda wins re-election.

Boyda will never be more vulnerable than in her first run for re-election, and there were reasons why Ryun lost to her in the first place. He should have sat it out. By forcing a divisive primary, he isn't necessarily handing the election to Boyda but he's making it harder to beat her.

I’ve read the details and it seems that Jenkins is of the RINO variety.

Ryun is backed by Club for Growth.

So I would vote for Ryun.

So I would vote for Ryun.

Ryun lost to Boyda in 2006 because he neglected his district and got caught in a bald-faced lie. Now he wants the district to think he's changed? I have a problem believing that strategy will be successful.

I would vote for either Jenkins or Ryan just to knock Boyda out of office. She has disappointed me on many levels. She refuses to sign the discharge petition to get the Broadcasters Freedom bill out of committee. Her reason? The “fairness doctrine” doesn’t exist so why do we need the bill. I have that in writing. I got the letter the same week Pelosi said she wanted the fairness doctrine reinstated. Guess who’s tune she is dancing to?

Boyda is a tap dancer, she is very cleaver at crafting convoluted and completely illogical reasons for voting one way or the other. The reason that she has to do this is that she is simply following orders from her Fuhererin, Frau Obergruppen Fuhererin Nancy Pelosi. If the truth got out about that, she would never survive in Kansas.

I will vote for Jenkins in the primary, I hold Ryun personally responsible for this mess. Should he win anyway, I will do everything that I can to support him and defeat Boyda.

What a weird day. First the Supremes actually read the Constitution, now I am agreeing with you.

Ryun had lousy constituency services and became a DC person with two sons as lobbyists. He forgot Kansas and Boyda simply hustled during the election and took his job.

Ryun wants back on the gravy train. Not a reason to vote for him. He did nothing for his district.

Of course, no one here knows Boyda is a solid leftist. Her email bulletins make her look like a Reagan Conservative.

Boyda’s email to me said she wouldn't sign the discharge petition because she was worried about media consolidation and too few voices in the media.

It was a Pelosi press release retyped with her name.

She is a solid liberal/socialist in Congress and fakes it as a conservative here. The press doesn't cover her at all.

I think she will get reelected easily.

Boy howdy do I hope you are wrong. No offense intended. just an observation. I do think it’s going to get lively before the general election. In my opinion there should be plenty of ammo on both sides if it is Boyda and Ryan.

"Ryun had lousy constituency services"

News to me. He responded swiftly when I contacted his office, and I don't even reside in Kansas.

Maybe that's why. He did nothing for the people of his district.

I would dearly love to see Boyda booted but her staff at least works.

As for Ryuns, I called them once and their staff member was rude beyond belief.

Well, you shouldn’t judge him based on one staffer. For all you know, they may have been having a bad day. Whatever else, Ryun had a superb voting record.

I don’t- neither did his district. He went to Washington and forgot his district. Boyda didn’t win it, Ryun lost it. She campaigned, he didn’t. She showed up, he didn’t. The relatively small town/rural conservative second district flushed him regardless of how great his voting record was.

He’s the only choice, however, for Conservatives in this district in the GOP primary. Jenkins is a RINO. Ryun deserves a second chance.

Fine, as long as he remembers the people he represents this time.
