American voters are evenly divided on the need for stricter gun control laws but don't think city government should have the right to prevent citizens from owning handguns in their city.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 44% say stricter gun control laws while another 44% disagree and 12% are not sure. Most African-American and Hispanic voters believe stricter gun control laws are needed while a plurality (47%) of White voters disagree. Sixty-two percent (62%) of Democrats say stricter gun control laws are needed and 63% of Republicans hold the opposite view. Among unaffiliated voters, 37% want stricter laws while 48% disagree. Overall, the desire for stricter gun control laws is little changed from last December.
However, while there is an even divide on the question of whether stricter laws are needed, only 26% believe that city governments have the right to prevent citizens from owning handguns in their city. Sixty-four percent (64%) disagree and say such a restriction is a violation of the Second Amendment. The United States Supreme Court is expected to announce a decision soon on whether a Washington, DC law banning handguns violates the Constitution.
The Second Amendment was ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights, a collection of vital Amendments added shortly after the Constitution went into effect. The Amendment reads "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." Some have argued that this provides a right to bear arms only in the context of a well-regulated militia. Others reject that notion and say it's an individual right. The Supreme Court has never ruled definitively on that question. That last major Court ruling on this Amendment was issued nearly 70...

American voters are idiots period.
American voters are idiots. That’s why we have a constitution that was supposed to be graven in stone and not scribbled on the supreme court’s toilet paper.
They don’t appear to haven broken the poll down far enough to determine how Texans feel about it. I’m pretty sure most of us would define gun control as, “hitting what you shoot at,” unless Austin was included.
I dont know about the rest of you but I think the day of the telephone survey is past.
Many people today no longer have a home phone. Many have cut cost and eliminated pesky telemarketers (and survey callers) cancelling their land line service and now have only a cell phone.
Now telephone surveys will predominately be capturing an older portion of the populace who are wedded to their antiquated land lines.

Most people think the USSC is going to come out tomorrow in favor of the second amendment. I am not so sure based on todays ruling regarding the death sentence for convicted rapists. I am nervous.
I pray for that every day.
I think they’ll look to foreign law for guidance.
Please someone who can link to the video for the Taurus 411 Judge handgun please post it. Perfect for home protection and defending yourself during a car jacking. Fires both 410 shotgun shells and .45 calibre ammunition in the same barrel. Perfect for standing your ground against the gang bangers who do the drive by shooting against unarmed residents.
****The Supreme Court has never ruled definitively on that question. ***
Actually they have. in 1856 Dred Scott vs Sandford the supreme court ruled in it’s opinion that one of the rights freed Negros would have is “The RIGHT to go about armed wherever they went”..
So freed Negros were not really free after all.
And just for the record, before the Civil War the Second Amendment was considered an individual RIGHT.
After the Civil War, with all those freed slaves, a new concept was devised to keep them from owning guns, the “Collective” Right which the anti-gun people continue to try to cram down our throats.
Tough social policy decisions need to be made by the Supreme Court. That's what "Supreme" means - you remember how Saddam was the Supreme Leader of Iraq - same thing. It means THEY RULE. And they do!
Tomorrow our masters will tell us if we can keep our guns. I can hardly wait!
Yes, exactly. God rules in Heaven, the Supreme Court rules on Earth. "Render onto the Justices that which is theirs" to paraphrase a famous Jewish carpenter.
I think 5 of the justices would be shaking in their shoes if they thought there was a God that would judge their actions. And I do.
What a stupid poll... What does “stricter” mean? Without knowing that, the poll is meaningless. Rasmussen should know better than to publish crap like this.
I don’t believe any of these numbers.
I think somebody said on here there’s some kind of receiver a person could hook up to their computer to receive cable. If so, you could eliminate three bills by doing that; having only a cell phone, a WiFi enabled/wireless computer, and an add-on to a computer to get cable.
