Taking Ownership of Iraq?
NY Times ^ | 25 june 08 | foutsc

What seems to have happened in Iraq in the last few months is that the Iraqi mainstream has finally done some liberating of itself. With the help of the troop surge ordered by President Bush, the mainstream Sunni tribes have liberated themselves from the grip of Al Qaeda in their provinces. And the Shiite mainstream — represented by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and the Iraqi Army — liberated Basra, Amara and Sadr City in Baghdad from both Mahdi Army militiamen and pro-Iranian death squads.

I'm neither a fan of the Toilet Paper of Record, nor of Thomas Friedman, but this is a good article. You know things are looking up when the Old Senile Lady is putting out positive stories and commentary about Iraq.

Iraq has been won. We shouldn’t hesitate to say that. Now the issue is not to lose what we’ve won.

But be advised: These parallel wars of self-liberation still don’t amount to a single national unity movement. Civil war could still be in Iraq’s future. Not all Sunnis and Shiites have had their “crossings.” Iraq is miles away from being healthy.

I think this is reasonable.  150 years after our own civil war, resentment and secessionism are very much alive.

It is kind of amusing to read a liberal's story about something they don't want to admit is true. It is written as a psychoanalysis making every excuse possible to give Iraqis all the credit for victory and the U.S. and Britain none.

You will notice he never directly said that there was success in Iraq and he summed it all up with the idea that maybe it will all fall apart still anyway.

Friedman is still off the mark. The troop surge ordered by President Bush did play a whole lot more part of it than this guy give credit.

It was with out troops support, arms, training and even a lot confidence they got knowing that the U.S. troops were backing them and with the direction of General Petraeus put the plan all together.

It was the left and the rag like The New York Times kicked and screamed all the while. They should instead write articles explaining why they are so wrong so much of the time and while they are at it, apologize to their readers and the American people.
