WASHINGTON -- -- Buoyed by enthusiasm among Democrats and public concern over the economy, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has captured a sizable lead over Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) at the opening of the general election campaign for president, the Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg Poll has found.
In a two-man race between the major party candidates, registered voters chose Obama over McCain by 49% to 37% in the national poll conducted last weekend.
On a four-man ballot including independent candidate Ralph Nader and Libertarian Bob Barr, voters chose Obama over McCain by an even larger margin, 48% to 33%.
Obama's advantage, bigger in this poll than in most other national surveys, appears to stem in large part from his positions on domestic issues. Both Democrats and independent voters say Obama would do a better job than McCain at handling the nation's economic problems, the public's top concern.
In contrast, many voters give McCain credit as the more experienced candidate and the one best equipped to protect the nation against terrorism -- but they rank those concerns below their worries about the economy.
Moreover, McCain suffers from a pronounced "enthusiasm gap," especially among the conservatives who usually give Republican candidates a reliable base of support. Among voters who describe themselves as conservative, only 58% say they will vote for McCain; 15% say they will vote for Obama, 14% say they will vote for someone else, and 13% say they are undecided.
By contrast, 79% of voters who describe themselves as liberal say they plan to vote for Obama.
Even among voters who say they do plan to vote for McCain, more than half say they are "not enthusiastic" about their chosen candidate; only 45% say they are enthusiastic. By contrast, 81% of Obama voters say they are enthusiastic......................................................................................................................

This is crazy! How the Republicans get handed the bad economy when the DEMs have been in charge is beyond me.
That 12-point lead is in the LA Times newsroom.
Four of the last five elections, the leader of the polls in June, went on to lose the election.
So without even one debate or convention yet,
These polls are incredibly meaningless at this point.
Dukakis was ahead by large margins too.
The Media...
Must be an “exit” poll, like the one that told us Kerry won on the night of the last presidential election.
“Among voters who describe themselves as conservative, only 58% say they will vote for McCain; 15% say they will vote for Obama, 14% say they will vote for someone else, and 13% say they are undecided.”
Ok, conservatives are upset with McCain, so 15% of those will vote for Obama? That alone makes this poll very suspect.
Wasn’t Obama like, 40 zillion percentage points ahead of McCain just last week?
What a bunch of loons. They want Obama as president so bad it makes them look more stupid every day. They have given up any resemblance of fairness and objectivity.
I think that Obama does have capability for transforming some of the RVs to LVs.
However, this is STILL just a RV poll.
A bit bloated.
Real contest has not begun yet.
ONE Mis-step on any of the foreign policy issues and Obambi would be wiped out.
I did however find it a CAUSE FOR CONCERN that BARR and NADER are sucking votes from McCain.

QUESTION: If the 2008 presidential election were held today, would you vote for Barack Obama, the Democrat, or John McCain, the Republican?
McCain - State - 44% Men - 49% Women - 39% Undecided - 14%
Obama - State - 42% Men - 37% Women - 47% Undecided - 14%
Undecided - 14%
Other good questions asked in poll as well.... ;)
I don’t think these polls mean a thing.
But I do worry that we’ll get a race to the bottom. The media still haven’t started to work on their great smear attack on McCain. Evidently they are holding their fire until the election is closer.
But then it will be all out, and there’s plenty of ammunition there for them to work with. Just wait until they start piling on.
Horsesh**.
Numbers won't get me to accept these answers anymore.
Those who respond to the poll will have to include a brief (50 word or less) essay answer describing the merits of Obama's plan for fixing the economy over McCain's plan. If the majority of respondants cannot formulate a coherent summary of what each candidate's position is, I refuse to accept the noises from the peanut gallery.
Does anyone have any evidence that nationalizing the oil industry will improve the US economy?
It’s the enthusiasm thing. The frenetic and highly excited supporters of Barack Mohammed (since we are no longer to refer to his given middle name) Obama, Jr., the charismatic, messianic Magic Negro, are not excited about what he IS, but for what he permits them to imagine what he could be and do.
Reality is, the Presidency is not the ultimate power in the world, and there just won’t be time to get to all the details his supporters think he should be attending to.
Like Jimmy Carter, he will try to micromanage the entire administrative branch, and end up hopelessly tied down on the minutiae, unable to determine direction of policy.
George W. Bush will turn out to be of immense stature in comparison with this sock puppet of George Soros.
The media TOLD us that Dookie was ahead by large margins whether it was true or not. They also gave his sister an Oscar even though she hasn't been heard of in any Hollywood "A-list" sense before or since.
Having lived up there in 1988, everyone I encountered knew that the "Massachusetts Miracle" was a myth. A lie. Propaganda to sweep him into the White House.
‘Lympie was his cuz.
