African is not a race!

Does anyone from Hawaii know if this is how they categorized race back in 1961? What if he had been from the USA, but was black?

In 1961 the race might have been recorded as: Negro

I don’t know what terms were used in the states then.

African American didn’t appear until after MLK.

I had been told from one source that they listed the race according to how the applicant filled it in. Granted, I don't know if thats accurate or not, but I saw on another persons Hawaii birth cert going around that the father was listed as white and mother as caucasian.
