Caltrans has announced it will no longer accept applications for its Adopt-a-Highway volunteer cleanup program.
The move comes after members of the San Diego Minutemen sued the state agency over the right to sponsor a stretch of I-5 south of San Clemente near a Border Patrol checkpoint.
Caltrans routinely posts signs noting the individuals or groups who sponsor that particular stretch of highway, but removed the Minuteman group's sign in January. Caltrans officials said then that they feared vandalism or protesters along the freeway.
Caltrans offered the group another stretch of San Diego County highway, but the Minutemen have sought to regain a section of I-5. [snip]

Manning said the decision wasn’t directly related to the controversy with the Minuteman Project, an anti-illegal immigration group. The issue is one the state will not comment on because of litigation.

The only controversy that possibly exists is between the liberals that run Kalifornia, and their pro-illegal campaign contributors.
If the Minutemen can’t sponsor a section, then no one should be able to.
Why couldn’t the Minutemen do the trash clean-up without a sign? Or do they have some other agenda?
Actually I have always thought that this is just another feel good liberal program that is all symbolism. The roads in California are actually cleaned by inmate crews.
This was a strange story from the beginning. The highway clean-up program is supposed to be a random lottery in terms of what section of road your group cleans. Ironically, the Minutemen were given the exact part of I-5 with the border checkpoint and signs warning of families running across the freeway. I don’t know if there was an “insider” on the selection committee, but I don’t think karma is that powerful. Anyway, CalTrans offered them a stretch in the middle of nowhere and the MM refused. Honestly, I don’t know where this is heading but doubt there is some other agenda.
Actually that is actually a really good post. Don’t you actually think so? Lol.
I should have proof read before posting.
Well, my guess is that insisting on being treated the same as everyone else is their agenda.
Are you a total frickin' idiot? Why can't they do it without recognition? As if that wasn't a prejudiced thing, to deny them the right to a sign? It is the principle dumb a**. It is discrimination of the highest order and aimed at conservative rule of law supporters.
It’s not the Minutemen who have the agenda! It’s the PC CalTrans public employee who “feared vandalism of the signs” or “protesters on the highway” or some such nonsense and ordered the signs down.
After all, we know that ANYONE who supports enforcing the borders can’t be allowed recognition for showing pride in their community by cleaning up the other illegal rubbish alongside our highways.
If their goal is to “beautify” the roadside, it shouldn’t make any difference where they do it.
Only a dumb*** puts “dumb***” in his response.
I think it is CalTrans selling advertising space.
Not true, a person who recognizes a duma** puts duma** in his reply. Live with it.
Our church looked into the adopt a highway program. There are actually companies that contract to do the ‘volunteer cleanup’ for businesses that ‘adopt’ a section of the highway.
So yeah, it’s just another form of advertising. You adopt a highway for a fee, then pay someone else to clean up the roadway every month for the privilege of putting up the sign.
By the way - our church never did complete the application. We wanted a service project for the youth group, but the Cal Trans rules prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from picking up trash on the side of the road...
There are over 4,000 groups that have been approved for the Caltrans Adopt-a-Highway program but the Minutemen set them off?
Amazing.
Those “Adopt-a-Highway” signs piss me off. They’re such an eyesore.
