A lot of otherwise intelligent people seem to assume that humans are uncontestably and permanently at the top of the food chain, generally from the fact that their usual encounter with the other contenders is wrapped in plastic in the supermarket. Nothing so disabuses the innocent of that notion as getting stalked. A whole lot of atavistic memory comes flooding back when you're walking in the nice friendly woods and you hear the brush rustling nearby...and whatever it is, is keeping up with you.

Oh, you have that right! I spend a good amount of time in the field, and even here in Wisconsin we've got them (WI DNR Cougar Page). Strange as it sounds, they're actually native to WI. I have yet to see any sign where I'm, but I never go into the field unarmed.
