OS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71. ADVERTISEMENT Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters. Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

One of the problems with our society is that we are not allowed to judge people, and I think that is a serious flaw. This has created all kinds of problems for us.

Plus, it is what Liberals strive for-they know that if you have no values, you cannot be accused of hypocrisy, which to them, seems to be the worst crime. A very Roussouian outlook, that each of us should be able to do WHATEVER we wish without any interference or judgement from others.

I haven’t found Carlin to be funny since I was a teenager, and the last few times I saw him, it saddened me more than it angered me. I hope he has found peace, since he had a lot of demons haunting him.

Saw the title of this thread and thought I'd come in and read some funny tributes to Carlin...boy was I wrong!...the man was a comedian...if he didn't make you laugh why listen to him...perhaps in real life as in cyberspace we need an "ignore" button huh?...I'll let God be the judge of Mr. Carlin and I'll remember him as the comedian that he was who gave me many many laughs through the years...Nobody on this board knows if Mr. Carlin made his peace with God before he passed away or not...if he did, great...if not, it's George that will have to deal with it...RIP George.

True reason for mourning his death. Unless he repented, he is in torment tonight.

Ah George. Thanks for the laughs.

I recall hearing that George once walked out on stage and told the audience he'd forgotten his notes, then just basically stood on-stage for 5 or 10 minutes, said 'Thank You' and walked off.

I’m “shell-shocked”. Or is it “battle fatigue”?

A little known fact about George Carlin is that for a few years (within the past 10 or so), he provided the narrator's voice for a very popular children's program 'Thomas the Tank Engine' (Thomas & Friends), I happened to be flipping the channels and discovered it quite by accident, I thought "that voice sounds familiar" and at the end of the program, sure enough: "Storyteller's Voice: George Carlin" and he was quite good at it.

Rest in Peace George. Don't use those 7 dirty words up there, ok?

Me too, let's hope for the best for him.

R.I.P. George Carlin (altough I have to say that his earliest bits were the best and he went downhimm from there)

Favorite was when he did 2 minutes of absolute silence on the Tonight Show. Came out and put his hands in his pockets and just stood there. A very uncomfortable audience that finally just broke into laughter.

Brilliant.

He was a liberal of sorts, but also seemed to be more of a libertarian/anarchist than anything else.

Either way, the man was funny, and all I can do is say RIP to a man who was a great comedian. Not that I always agreed with him, but he was funny.
