I started my education with the intention of becoming a geneticist. Somehow I ended up writing code (wtf?).

Eheh, so instead of deciphering ancient, highly compressed, biological programming code - you're writing computer code?

I've always been amazed at the level of compression achieved in DNA.

Actually, I’m retired from writing code, except for the occasional game or two.
I got sidetracked from biochem when, in grad school, I asked these two EE majors (who I met in a bar) if there was any way I could hook up my gas chromatograph to a computer. That was in 1978. The answer was an emphatic yes. It wasn’t long before I realized that I was a better programmer than chemist. I got my MS in chemistry but never worked a day in the field. Give me a closed-door office and my own computer. Ah, what freedom.
