Wasn’t there a Star Trek episode about a couple of planets who were waging a sanitary war? People were still dying but it wasn’t so “messy”. So war itself became extended because it wasn’t so bad. Seems the crew put a stop to it by somehow screwing up the computers that “disinfected” the battles with the justification that if war becomes the horror it is meant to be, it will end sooner.
