In 1961, it would have said “Negro.” Nobody, but nobody, said “Black” until around 1967, and it took several years before it was standard.

My recollection as well. In Florida, at least, "colored" was the polite term used by older folks; "Negro" was the preferred term amongst polite, and liberal, society.

Your polite, liberal society clearly used the expression "Nigra" as I distinctly recalled. Being a Yankee sort of guy it stood out in my mind.

Hard to believe Souvrnrs thought they could fool people.
