Urgent: House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries
Per Pergram-Capitol Hill
House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.
Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.
They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow.
At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments.
Here are the highlights from briefing
Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.
Hinchey on why they postponed the Appropriations markup
1119
I think there aren't enough votes for the Peterson amendment. It wasn't taken up (the Interior spending bill) because of the omnibus Appropriations bill. That's the main focus of the Appropriations Committee.
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)

They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.
Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the Resources Committee

You cannot drill your way out of this.
Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House Select Committee on Global Warming

The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy.

. Lets see how fast the refineries register their headquaters in another country with their functional equipment, leaving the old stuff here. Halliburton moved to Dubai because of the RATs. They have to leave on those great big freighter ships.
I guess American Revolution II is brewing to win our independence from Liberal dictators. Is it time for another Boston Tea Party?????
“They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.”
Yeah, it is called saving this country. Also nationalizing the refineries will not produce another drop of oil. These people are complete morons.
Dear Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY),
Feel free to have the government raise the capital by means other than taxation/fees and use that money to build as many refineries as possible. Buy your oil on the open market, refine it, then sell it at your own stations. You may not subsidize the costs nor ignore laws, environmental or otherwise, that constrain private companies. Also, you may not pass laws that benefit the government unless those laws also benefit private businesses.
You give that a try and let us know how it works out. Compete in a free market and see just how fast private enterprise kicks your lazy bureaucratic asses. Stupid twit.
Also, if your “business” fails, we reserve the right to exile you and anyone involved to whatever socialist nirvana (cuba, n korea, venezuela) will take you.
Is that Woody Allen?
Little secret for you, the Mob in New York is so tough USPS is the express service of necessity there.
Department of Justice controls that situation. Wonder what they get out of it.
Fortunately, they could get help from the efficiency experts in the Post Office.
Bad. Very bad. This is nothing more than a ploy to usurp more power and control over the people. If the government has control over the flow of oil, who is to say that it cannot use that leverage as a means of control or extortion. This will be the beginning of a soviet-society...a neo-Marxist era
The refineries have very little to do with the price of gas, except, no refineries, no gas.
The Bolshecrat play book is that higher energy costs will force the public to sign on to their alternative clean sources. We have seen the success ethanol is. Junior has express dismay at how fast gas has gone up, not that it is too high. He will experience higher prices in his first term and that would mean no congress or second term. This will force him in his first congressional term raise taxes to subsidize the cost of gasoline, so that people will think he is doing something to bring down the price. Rationing will not be out of the question, but, that puts his failure into a form that people can see and feel. If he wants a second, if not a first, term he will go along with drilling.
The biggest problem the Bolshies have is their slavery to the environmental lobby. Windmills are suppose to be one of their great hopes. But, like everything else they do, they let the environmentalists dictate where. And, that is nowhere. Fat Ted won’t let them put windmills off Cape Cod.
Democrats should nationalize OPEC. Seriously, I don’t see how refineries are even making money. I looked at what you get out of a barrel of oil, as far as what all you can distill out of it, and they can’t be making a killer profit out of the refining.
the rats are just following on of their heroes lead and Chavez is doing such a fine job at destroying the Venezuelan oil industry.
You're right; they're blatant about it. They think they've succeeded in totally propagandizing the memory of Joe McCarthy, but they haven't.
I just wish the GOP were as outspoken and militant as the dimlibs, but they're so wimped out they continually let the Bolsheviks get away with their garbage.
Oh yeah, government running the refinieries is really going to get things straightened out. Always does. Look at the DMV. Your local metro system? Health Care? Border control?
The refineries are NOT the problem. They are running at near capacity. We are importing gasoline as well as oil because we can’t refine enough oil. We need more refineries, and we need to reduce the number of fuel blends from 20+ to 2 or 3.
Who needs foreign enemies when we have home grown ones sucking the life out of America in DC? This is going to come as a major shock to the clueless sheeple.
“I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of industries.”
— Thomas Jefferson, 1824
Exxon has their petrol stations up for sale...they could buy them now.
