How ironic that the Pope served in the Hitler youth and a couple of different military organizations, the Luftwaffenhelfer (”Luftwaffe support personnel”) and the Army as well as the Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labor Service) . The associations were not voluntary. He deserted the Army in the last weeks of the war, which was not all that unusual.
