Who is running for Allen's Seat -- that seat was held by Snow's husband IIRC before Allen took it.
Maine had a primary on June 10th.
In the First Congressional District, in Southern Maine, Chellie Pingree won the democrat nomination. Pingree had run against Susan Collins for the U.S. Senate seat in 2002, but Collins easily won re-election at that time.
Chellie Pingree is an ultra-liberal and, unfortunately, is favored to win this House seat in November. She was until just recently the president of “Common Cause.”
An Iraq war veteran almost won the democrat nomination for this House seat, but came up short.
Charlie Summers won the Republican primary for this House seat, but he faces an uphill battle in this democrat-leaning district. Summers is a state senator here in Maine and was the regional head of the SBA.
John McKernan, husband of U.S. Senator Olympia Snow, was elected to this House seat in 1984 and again in 1986. He gave up this House seat when he successfully ran for Governor of Maine in 1987.
The last time a Republican won this seat was in 1994, when James Longley Jr., son of an Independent Maine Governor, was swept in along with the Republican Revolution that year. He was defeated by 10 points in 1996 when labor unions and left wing groups spent millions of dollars to unseat Longley. Former Portland, Maine mayor Tom Allen won this seat in 1996 and held it until just recently, when he gave up the House seat to run for the U.S. Senate.
Bottom line: A liberal guy is vacating this House seat, and a liberal gal is favored to win it.
