And we thought that the idea of a monopoly was what was holding up the Sirius-XM satellite radio merger.
Nu-uh.
Nope. It's about setting aside a ton of channels on the new satellite conglomerate for "minorities" and "public broadcasting." So says the BUSH-nominated "Republican" chairman of the FCC, Kevin Martin. Who needs liberals when Republicans are doing the "Heckuva Job"?:
Much of the attention at the FCC over the next few weeks will focus on the issue of satellite channels that are set aside for noncommercial programming and minority-owned programming. FCC Chairman Martin suggested 8% of the combined company's lineup be devoted to noncommercial and minority-owned stations, or 24 channels total.
That could mean seriously expanded space for religious broadcasters and public-radio broadcasters, such as American Public Media, which already provides programs such as "A Prairie Home Companion" to both satellite radio services.
Interesting. What the heck do they think the multiple rap and hip-hop stations on both Sirius and XM are? What do they think Snoop Dogg's XM station and 50 Cent's "G Unit Radio," which dominates Eminem's Shade 45 Sirius channel, are?
What do they call the channels that run Al Sharpton's radio show? The XM women's channel, "Take Five"--which begged me for an audition, then dissed me as being too intelligent of a conservative and for not repeating her left-wing orthodoxy, etc. (read the details here)--runs the audio of the syndicated "Tyra Banks" minstrel show. She's not a minority? Amy Reyer--an intellectually-challenged uber-liberal, who has pro-choice, pro-Jane Fonda, and anti-John Roberts (S. Ct. Chief Justice) material hanging in her cubicl--programs the station. She wanted to run audio of the Fonda/Cindy Sheehan bus tour that never happened, telling me that women want to hear it. Right.
XM is dominated by PC liberal aihread programmers...

“Free market capitalism”
That phrase is just pops and buzzes to the left.
Martin has been bracketed as a liberal activist some time back. Keep an eye on this maggot.
The “Fairness Doctorine’s” first test run. This is the first step of the new era of Obama-Marxism. You MUST have gays, miniorities and Liberal perspective...or else.
24 channels I’ll be zipping past on the dial.
Aren’t white men a minority, now?
Our government has become little more than an organized mob that deals in coercion and extortion. It is supported by government educated fools who have made a pact with the devil. They will continue to vote for the person who promises to steal from their neighbor just so long as this thief passes a portion of the proceeds of the robbery to them.
exactly! they can put those channels on there but they can’t make anyone listen to them! i love XM radio and i never have to come into contact with any left wing drivel bc i program my faves in, and that’s that.
Indeed. I’m hoping that the merger goes through because I would get NASCAR and NFL if Sirius/XM merge. If not, hey, I get both on television and I have Sunday Ticket with DirecTV.
I’m trying to figure out why the FCC should be allowed to tell pay services what they must and must not broadcast, and for forcing broadcasters into markets that don’t exist. XM has one Left talk station and one Right talk station. They have music stations that cater to a club/dance techno/rap/hip-hop/r&b/soul audience in FAR greater numbers than those that cater to country/rock&roll (which is what I’m assuming they consider a WHITE audience).
Dear FCC: You cannot make people listen to liberal talk radio (which is really what all this is aiming to) if they don’t want to. And furthermore, why should any PAY service have to engage in “noncommercial” programming? There are plenty of FREE radio stations that people can tune in.
One wonders if DirecTV and DishTV decided to merge if they’d do the same thing. One of the benefits, to me at least, of satellite TV is that I don’t have to wade through seven local cable access stations.
Straight white men with jobs are a minority.
After initially liking it, I was soon disillusioned by Sirius when I started hearing the repeated songs, and the supposedly “commercial free” radio full of self-promos, the comedy channels playing the same jokes over and over, blah blah blah. Not much improvement over regular radio. I have music on my palm which I hook up to my car’s speakers and I listen to my own playlists. I’d rather have the ability to access internet radio.
Well that's great. Set asides for money-losing endeavors.
How I understand it, these “minority/noncommercial” stations will have to lease space on XM/SIRI, thus those open stations should only be filled with programing with commercials. It is a slippery slope, but at least XM/Siri won’t have to subsidize the programming.
Is there anything the XM / Sirius subscribers can do? It’s our money they’re talking about here. Email or write to the FCC?
Download torrents, burn to disk, repeat.
ROFLMAO! This is the government...they don’t care about the subscribers, you silly girl! A G E N D A

When do I get a Congressional Whitey Caucus?
Great. 24 channels of “hate whitey” preachers and La Raza.
Me too, I miss my NASCAR on XM.
