Yes, you do anything to protect the baby. They could have started smashing the windows of his truck, and he would have probably gone after them and let the baby alone long enough for some additional help.

Look at the article. I mapped the address on Google maps. It is in the middle of farmland. Turlock is about 6-8 mikes away. I have been in the Turlock area. Once you get outside of the Turlock limits (3x3 miles), it is all farms.
The article states that the first people on the scene were an elderly couple and that someone tried to pull him off the baby, to no avail. Breaking his windows wouldn't have done anything.
