At a San Francisco memorial service days after 9/11, the Rev. Amos Brown, pastor of the Third Baptist Church and a former member of the Board of Supervisors, drew "loud cheers" when he asked, "America, is there anything you did to set up this climate?"

"America, America, what did you do - either intentionally or unintentionally - in the world order, in Central America, in Africa where bombs are still blasting? Oh, America."

The former partner of Mark Bingham, of Flight 93 fame, was present, as were Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, then- Gov. Gray Davis, and Pelosi, among others. Feinstein and Davis walked out.

"With all due respect to some of the sentiments that were earlier expressed - some of which I agree, make no mistake [neither Pelosi nor Sandalow says what those sentiments were] ... the act of terrorism on September 11 put those people outside the order of civilized behavior, and we will not take responsibility for that."

According to Sandalow, Pelosi subsequently went to Bingham's partner, Paul Holm, "and, fighting back tears, told him how sorry she was for Brown's comments."
