BIDEN RISING IN VEEPSTAKES (McCain wants Lieberman? Get me a rope...)

BIDEN RISING IN VEEPSTAKES

June 14, 2008 -- BEFORE multimillionaire Democratic power broker James A. Johnson quit as Sen. Barack Obama's chief vice presidential screener, the name that came to the fore in his internal discussions was 65-year-old, six-term Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware.

Biden, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, made a good impression in his losing bid for the presidential nomination this year. The downside on him is that he talks too much. But he provides expertise and experience in national security that Obama lacks and, as a Catholic, adds cultural diversity to the ticket.

A footnote: Presidential supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton who are possibilities for vice president include Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell. The leading Clintonite for vice president, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, has definitively ruled himself out.

SOURCES close to Sen. John McCain say the Republican presidential candidate likes the idea of Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman, re-elected from Connecticut as an independent in 2006, or former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge for vice president - if he could get away with it. The political consensus is that McCain couldn't get away with either, and he knows it.

Lieberman, one of McCain's closest Senate friends, vigorously supports him for president and sometimes joins him on the campaign trail. However, Lieberman opposes Republican policy on nearly everything except Iraq, where he has backed the war effort.

Ridge, who served as President Bush's secretary of homeland security, is a generally conservative Republican except for being pro-choice on abortion. He was considered for vice president in 1996 and 2000, but was ruled out both times because of the abortion issue.

Please. I think it is going to be Gov Sarah Palin of Alaska. It would be great if he could get Michael Steele or Colin Powell. I think stories about Lieberman and Bloomberg is rope-a-dope.

"When Biden was in the race, he made the point that he was more electable than Hillary or Barry. I believed that, but he did not have enough star power for the Democrat primary crowd. Barry could do worse than Biden. Biden could help him with Hillary voters, Edwards cannot help him much with those voters."

We are so screwed.

MeCain may, as always, be thinking only of himself and calculate that he can beat Obama by replacing Conservative votes with Hillary votes.

Another theory was Hillary was bidding for a Supreme Court Nomination for her support of Obama.

One thing for sure, "That Woman" is not going away quietly!

Will this insane year never end?

God save the Republic!

2004 wasn't so bad, but it started a trend. I've got a sinking feeling we're looking at the age of the campaign that never ends.

I'm beginning to think as soon as the election is over, the candidates for 2012 will start the whole thing over again.

You said it!

Anyone who thinks that the Republicans blew a golden opportunity when they controlled the Executive and the Congressional branches of government and then votes for McCain is invited to take part in a reenactment of the "The Flagellates of the 14th Century."

Fair enough. I think Romney gives him Mass and Michigan. Plus he's a Governor, that helps in my book. Everyone worried about a Mormon in the White House better weigh that against a Muslim in the White House.

Thanks for your reply

If McCain picks Obomber for VEEP - would that be considered a huge shift to the right?

I didn’t want Lieberman to be vice president in 2000 and nothing has happened to change that opinion.

No way in heck does McCain-Lieberman get my vote.

The problem is the evangelical heavy weights supported Huckabee only to get Romney out of the race.

Of course they will. It's a huge business that relies on candidates spending money.

I was raised in that Evangelical community. I used to go with Mom and she voted for the family as directed by Dad. Those times have changed. I don’t think everyone understands the speed at which Government works now vs 35 years ago.

I hope you have plenty of KY, because McCain is going to stick it to conservatives. Apparently, he doesn’t give a rat’s behind about what conservatives think.
