What absurd and irrational questions!

The child had two parents. Are you forgetting that his custodial parent chose to get him out of Cuba and to the USA? It’s not a matter of ‘getting our hands on him,” since his mother risked and lost her life in her attempt to let her child live in freedom.

No one from the US went to Cuba to try to get Elian or any other Cuban child out... at great risk, many Cubans have chosen to do that on their own.

Elian’s mother’s death left the father as the only parent to make decisions for the child’s life. IIRC, the father had had nothing to do with Elian before he became an international political issue, and was dispatched by Castro to the US to exercise his previously unexercised parental rights.

So, bottom line, yes, the father had that right, but the choice to get him out of Cuba was that of the custodial parent in her lifetime.
