We bought one several years back for one of the kids to use in his non-airconditioned on-campus apartment. The air is kept separate. The "tube" had two channels ~ one brought in outside air to the heat exchanger, and the other blew that air back to the outside. With one person in the apartment things were dry and cooler. With more than one person in there, things were dry.

Still, it was always better than "outside" and he could sit there at his PC doing homework while chilling under the cool breeze coming from the portable unit.

Thanks for the info. Obviously some units are better designed than others. For efficency, the exhaust air point should be some distance from the intake air.
