In Wisconsin They Treat Their Academics Right: No way to win public's trust

HERE WE GO AGAIN, with the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents demonstrating its arrogance and contempt for the taxpayers who foot the bills.

The board approved whopping raises for top UW officials. The new UW-Madison chancellor, Biddy Martin, was hired with a salary of $437,000 a year, more than $100,000 higher than her predecessor John Wiley was paid. President Kevin Reilly was granted a raise of nearly $80,000, moving from $342,000 a year to $421,500 nnually by next June. SOME READERS may remember just a few years ago, in 2003, when the regents were ruled in violation of Wisconsin open meetings law for discussing and approving raises for top executives during a secret meeting held by telephone conference.

Is getting together in person for a secret meeting any better?

Meanwhile, an average 5.5 percent tuition increase has been adopted for UW students and their families to fork over.

...And to make it all the more difficult to follow, the board discussed the raises and voted to enact them in a secret session.

We must be affluent here in the Badger State. We pay out tons of money in overtime to our state workers: An audit released Wednesday found 59 state employees earned more than $100,000 in overtime alone over three years and revived questions about whether some employees are abusing the state’s sick leave policies. For instance, a nurse at the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility last year made $225,462, including $103,412 in overtime. Also, a resident care technician at the Mendota Mental Health Institute worked an average of 95 hours a week over a three-year period. Last year, the employee earned $111,743, including $75,674 in overtime. So, we pay our college brains well, and our worker bees too.
