MIchele Bachmann: 'Cap and trade'? More like 'tax and spend'
Minneapolis Star Tribune ^ | June 9, 2008 | MICHELE BACHMANN

From its name, cap-and-trade legislation sounds harmless enough. Unfortunately, cap-and-trade would be more aptly called "tax and trade" or "tax and spend" and it is far from harmless, posing a serious threat to our economy and our personal freedoms.

A parliamentary maneuver was used on Friday to kill debate in the Senate, but this is only the beginning. With many national leaders, influential lobbyists and powerful special-interest groups pushing hard for a cap-and-trade bill, there is no doubt that this is going to be a hot debate in the months to come as well.

The bill in question is called America's Climate Security Act. However, like the subject of this bill, global warming, the legislation has been the subject of considerable hype and little hard-nosed analysis.

In this case, the federal government would impose arbitrary limits on six emission gases, with the primary emphasis on carbon dioxide. In order to prevent or "cap" these emissions, the government would sell permits to power plants, refineries, and natural gas producers, among others. To offset losses, the costs of the permits will be passed along in the form of increased energy costs to consumers (much like an energy tax).

As if costs weren't high enough already, now American businesses and users of energy -- nearly everyone -- would have to pay more for the right to use energy. One of the bill's main advocates, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., estimates the cost of these permits at $6.7 trillion by 2050. The federal government is estimated to directly receive $3.32 trillion, with $3.42 trillion in permits sold by other parties. American consumers will still pay the full $6.7 trillion tab.

Government, naturally, already has plans to spend this kitty, such as $342 billion for international aid, $288 billion for "wildlife adaptation," and

Taxation by any other name....all you really have to do is look at WHO supports this crap. Liberal crap. This is just more socialist confiscatory taxation. Plain and simple -— the liberal socialists want to take and control everything you have. And that is being “kind”....

Unfortunately we don;t have a man in the White House who will veto this.

Not do we have a candidate running for office who will either.

The entire subject of global warming has taken on an Orwellian aura. Its not science, its a kind of weird religion with extremist groups like the Sierra Club et al as its Chief Priests and the Sheeple as the congregation.

When a factory moves from the U.S. to the third world, net global pollution and emissions rise because the factor moves from a location with strict environmental standards to one with few, if any standards. Pollution gets worse. Carbon emissions increase.

In short, it is impossible for cap and trade to accomplish its stated purpose unless it is uniformly applied worldwide. Fat chance of that.

More insidious is the notion that companies will be able to reduce emissions (by moving production offshore) and sell the reductions in the form of carbon credits. In other words, cap and trade would be the first legislation in history to directly subsidize exporting jobs from the United States to other countries.

John Kerry used to rail against “Benedict Arnold CEOs” who moved production offshore. Well, Mr. Kerry, using your definition it would seem that you are a “Benedict Arnold Senator.”

Michelle Bachmann represents my district. Last summer I hosted a fundraiser for her in my yard. Later I received an anoymous threatening letter from some jerk who did not have the guts to identify himself/herself. The letter said I was a war monger supporting Michelle, and I did not likely have any relatives fighting in the armed services. Which was a lie. I have a nephew in Iraq right now.
