Planet Green, billed as "the first and only 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network," debuted on cable lineups last week.
What exactly does it mean to lead a "green" lifestyle? Planet Green aims to answer exactly that question -- though to help the medicine go down, the channel will feature light eco-tainment, including programs hosted by HBO heartthrob Adrian Grenier, celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, and hard-hitting celebrity journalist Maria Menounous. While it's easy to poke fun at Planet Green and the broader phenomenon of Green Chic, the deeper insight behind this greenthusiasm is roughly right: building a saner environmental future will indeed mean changing the way we live. However, it almostly certainly won't mean buying the kinds of eco-friendly products likely to be advertised on Planet Green.
Consider the eco-conscious automobile par excellence, the Toyota Prius. As it turns out, manufacturing the Prius's battery is extraordinarily carbon-intensive. Paying off this carbon debt through fuel savings will take 46,000 miles, according to Wired. Only after 100,000 miles would the Prius catch up with carbon savings offered by a ten-year-old Toyota Tercel. And the Prius would never catch up with a 1994 Geo Metro XFi.

The ads I’ve seen for this channel on the Military Channel are kind of funny but my guess is that Planet Green will rank somewhere behind Algore’s Current on my lineup.
I guess now it's Tofu and a Movie.
I watched some of it, looking for useful energy saving / water saving tips. What I saw was:
* “Green” renovations consistently 20-40% over budget
* Luxury houses where design to use little water or power was just another luxury
* Arrogant celebrities who jet around the world talk about buying very expensive ecofriendly / fair trade / recycled something else stuff
* you all ought to be vegetarian - but no good vegetarian cooking shows! (I eat some meat, but it’s getting expensive. Something other than rice and beans and peanut butter, please!)
I already miss Take Home Chef and Holmes on Homes on the Discovery Home Channel. You are definitely right about the ranking, thanks to a lot of egotistical busybodies. I knew this channel was going to eventually happen when I started seeing Fresh with Sarah Snow - cute chick but I could without the sermons.
I’ve always thought Green Giant needed to bring up his legs - beach muscles.
