NEW YORK -- Big Brown failed in his bid to become horse racing's 12th Triple Crown winner when he finished dead last to Da' Tara in the Belmont Stakes.
Da' Tara went wire to wire to beat eight other thoroughbreds over 1½ miles, the longest and toughest of the three classics.
"I had no horse," said Big Brown's jockey, Kent Desormeaux.
All week long, Big Brown's trainer, Rick Dutrow Jr. said the horse's victory was "a foregone conclusion." He turned out be wrong.
The bay colt's disappointing performance followed convincing victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He failed on the same track where 10 horses had been beaten over the last three decades. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978.
“Big Brown is NOT hurt.”
Big Brown did NOT get his steroids “hit” on May 15h. Very telling.
After all the hype...
I’m glad he was pulled up. If anything was wrong, that Triple Crown win would be pretty worhtless if you have a dead horse at the end of the race.
Long shots often finish first...and front runners often fade...ask Hillary.
The reason BB came in dead last was because the jockey feared something was seriously wrong with the horse “he had no horse under him, he said,” and the jockey didn’t want to hurt the horse. So, he slowed him down to safely get him home.
I think that the early seconds of the race caused BB to be off of his game. He got kicked and knocked around and pulled back, etc. etc. Just wasn’t his day.
But BB is still a great champion.
Most race horses get injected with steroids.
The triple crown is just tough to do, because it’s only a short time after the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness.
It’s very hot out today, and again, it’s a hard thing to accomplish.
Many horses die trying.
I’m just glad the jockey pulled up and didn’t push when he felt something was wrong.
Me not being a racing afficionado but watching his two prior races, it just makes me wonder.............
I knew it was over before they hit the far turn. Big Brown was in great position, Kent asked for more, and Big Brown had zero left. I’m sure the fact that it’s in the mid-90’s in NY today didn’t help matters, plus I wonder if the quarter-crack injury played a part in this.
I dunno, a really great champion ought to be able to withstand a certain amount of roughhousing in the course of a long race. I’m not talking about major kicking, of course. But bumping and fooling around are part of racing.
Despite any shuffling around shortly after the start, he was still acting very keen, so whatever happened at the start did not appear to affect him deeply. I just don’t think he has the bottom to do a mile and a half. Not all horses do. That is the purpose of this race: to find out which horses can run not just fast, but with endurance.
After all the betting. Hmmmmmm....
Omens: Eight Belles philly loses, breaks both front cankles, and is gone to the glue factory. Big Brown peters out and finishes deads last. Conclusion: McCain wins!
How long have they been using steroids on horses? Can’t be good for them. Does anyone know if Secretariat was juiced?
...and stock market rebounds...
I was thinking the same!! Great minds think alike.
There was something out of the starting gate. It doesn’t always look like its a good thing being on the post. Looks like BB got crowed out and possibility kicked. Bad start may have affected him. Also maybe the heat...?
I thought Lasix was banned in New York.
I found out different.
And all the interviews with the owner and the trainer: "he's perfect" He will have absolutely no problem...........the hoof is a common problem that will not affect him in any way........
I never had much faith in horse racing and the betting thing, too many hidden variables able to produce desired outcomes and too much money behind it all...........
