It is official: John Kerry to have competition (primary)

LOWELL – Gloucester attorney Ed O’Reilly got enough support from party officials today to ensure that he will give US Senator John F. Kerry his first Democratic primary challenge in 24 years.

At the state Democratic Party convention at the Paul E. Tsongas Arena, O’Reilly got 22.5 percent of the 2,574 ballots cast, more than the 15 percent he needed to secure a spot on the primary ballot. Kerry got the majority of votes, which means he'll get the party's endorsement.

"Party officials said this campaign is a nuisance. And it is. It’s a total nuisance," O’Reilly said to the convention floor. "Democracy is a nuisance. People said the American Revolution was a nuisance -- and it was!"

Kerry, in his fourth six-year term, last had a serious challenge in 1996, from Governor William F. Weld, a Republican. He hasn't had a primary opponent since 1984, when Kerry and three other Democrats ran for a seat vacated by Paul Tsongas.

Few predict the sitting senator will be vulnerable in a primary race. But it could mean more campaigning this summer – and marks an embarrassment that a former presidential candidate was unable to thwart the challenge from O’Reilly.

The former city councilor and commercial lobsterman had met all the other requirements to secure a spot on the primary ballot, including meeting with party officials, attending scores of local meetings to introduce himself, and gathering 10,000 signatures.

But his highest hurdle was garnering 15 percent of the vote from party leaders today -- a requirement Kerry worked to try to prevent.

Kerry took the stage to the sounds of Bruce Springsteen. He was joined by his wife, Teresa Heinz, and his daughter Vanessa.

"I’m here with humility to ask for your support," Kerry said.

From last Tuesday:

John Kerry aims to thwart Democrat challenger

U.S. Sen. John Kerry - wary of a potential political embarrassment - has been calling in favors to top Bay State Democrats in a bid to block a Gloucester lawyer from getting on the ballot to challenge him, the Herald has learned.

...snip...

Former state Democratic Party chairman Chester Atkins added: “John is an important senator, an important partner to Ted Kennedy and an important national voice. To have John distracted by someone who is just a nuisance candidate would be unfortunate.”

Did he tell the party people “Don’t you know who I am?”

The mighty infallible Lurch.

I hope this guy nails him.

Once a Mass Liberal becomes entrenched, it's only possible to get rid of him in one of three ways 1) He dies. This is the most common. 2) He quits. This happens only rarely. 3) You find someone more liberal, radical, extreme or perverse to run against him.

Never rely on indictment, scandal, whore mongering or other immoral behavior to get the pol into trouble. This is where the Moon-Bats rule.

"The mighty infallible Lurch."

John Forbes Kerry during his student days at Yale University.

My favorite non-photoshopped picture of all time

OMG, what will Kerry do besides pretending to be a Senator?

I don’t expect Lurch to lose the primary, but it would be great if Ed O’Reilly were to make a good showing. Incidentally, O’Reilly is a total moonbat, but I still wish him a strong showing.

Yeah. Right. Sure.

What about man-slaughtering a young campaign worker he was diddling by running off a bridge while DUI and leaving her to drown; or what about leading a nephew and his cousin on a wild drunken Easter escapade and one of them ends up accused of rape; or what about coming from a family who's patriarch had his perfectly normal but learning-disabled sister lobodomized; or what about having two brothers (now both dead) involved in numerous womanizing incidents with movie starlets; or having another distant relative accused and convicted of murder, a nephew killing himself in a drug overdose, and another killing himself, his wife and sister-in-law in an air accident due entirely to pilot error--DOESN'T THAT COUNT IN MACHUSETTS? ("Machusetts because the "asses" end up in Washington)

I hope not. If Kerry wins the Dem. nomination he will have to face Rep. contender Jeff Beatty, Army veteran. It’s silly to hope for anything in Mass., I think, but Beatty will at least embarass Kerry. I know that that is not setting the bar too high, but we have to start somewhere.

Being AWOL is a good thing. The less this doofus votes, the better it is for all of us.
