Bob Barr: No permanent bases in Iraq

Atlanta, GA — John McCain and Barack Obama are playing a petty game of “gotcha” while Iraqis demonstrate against the Bush administration’s plan to create long-term, if not permanent, bases in Iraq. “The next president should commit to a speedy and complete withdrawal from Iraq,” argues Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president, “and tell the Iraqi people that the U.S. troops will be going home.”

It is “no knock against America’s brave fighting men and women to admit that the war and subsequent occupation was a mistake and has been badly mismanaged,” he adds. The next president must undertake the withdrawal which President Bush will not consider. In fact, with violence down “now is the time to accelerate the turnover of full security authority to the Iraq government, since only when we leave will they have an incentive to take the tough steps necessary to meet their nation’s many challenges – military, economic, and political,” explains Barr.

In any case, so long as Washington dominates Iraq, U.S. forces will remain the target of antagonistic groups, militias, and insurgents. America will continue to lose brave men and women and waste billions of dollars—day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year. That must end. It has never been America’s purpose to occupy other nations in an effort to remold them, whether Iraq or anywhere else.

Barr represented the 7th District of Georgia in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003, where he served as a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, as Vice-Chairman of the Government Reform Committee, and as a member of the Committee on Financial Services. Prior to his congressional career, Barr was appointed by President Reagan to serve as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, and also served as an official with the CIA.

Since leaving Congress, Barr has been practicing law and has teamed up with groups ranging from the American Civil Liberties Union to the American Conservative Union to actively advocate every American citizens’ right to privacy and other civil liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Along with this, Bob is committed to helping elect leaders who will strive for smaller government, lower taxes and abundant individual freedom.

Barr, you are a pathetic little weasel to channel Nancy Pelosi and Obama like this. You actually think our troops support a speedy withdrawal from the "occupation"?

Barr just lost me. He’s acting as if the policies already in effect are his own idea. Idiot.

Bob Barr has shown that in one short step, one can go from being a respected conservative to being a total ass.

America to Bob Barr: we have bases in 39 countries, there is no reason to not have a few in Iraq... forever.

So I now know for sure Bob Barr is a damn idiot. Have ANY of these fools ever looked at a world map, or a map showing world resources? Have they heard of the Middle East? Terrorism? Iran, Syria, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia (all incredibly strategic countries which border Iraq)?? Do they know we have major interests there, troops in the region, fleet commitments?

Here is the take away lesson: Don't ever assume these rube politicians you see on tv every night, including the ones you like, are intelligent or actually have a clue. 90% of them do not.

What a weasle. The price our military has paid should include ongoing security and influence in the Middle East. Japan, Germany, and many other places that our military has sacrificed of itself, host a US military presence for many years to follow. That’s the insurance policy that hard won gains are backed by - no backsliding.

What a foolish idea to consider a total withdrawl, remote desert bases are an absolute bare minimum.

Nope, most of us don’t.

I don’t and I’ve done four tours.

Bob Barr is NO better than Ron Paul, Nancy Pelosi and any of the other surrender monkeys who want to surrender in the War on Terror.

Unless they have their head squarely up their a$$, why would ANYONE oppose any country granting us military basing rights in the middle of a war??? Basing rights are the brass ring that every country strives for. Remember when Turkey screwed us and wouldn’t let us invade Iraq from the North?? But geniuses like Bob Barr want to make sure we can never have such cooperation from Iraq.

Bob Barr having at least SOME credentials when it comes to security and foreign policy, I’d be willing to listen to his rationale.

For five minutes.

If he can’t grab my attention in that time with some sterling arguments, then he goes where McVain went - to the pile of used horse fodder out behind the barn.

It has never been America’s purpose to occupy other nations in an effort to remold them, whether Iraq or anywhere else.

The U.S. occupied Germany and Japan and "remolded" them pretty effectively. Ditto for the former Confederacy, the Philippines, and several banana republics. Has Barr started taking drugs in keeping with his new identity as a Liberaltarian? What a treacherous cretin.

We have been so poorly served by the politician class it is disgraceful. I railed on here for years (I know who am I but still) that the republicans don’t understand the principles they mouth, they don’t know the reasons behind the policies, they just say what they think will get them elected. That’s why they can’t defend policies effectively, they don’t understand them and they don’t really care. Exhibit A: Bob Barr
