Reunited, families trickling back to polygamous sect's Texas ranch(Barf Alert)
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 06/04/2008 | Brooke Adams

YFZ RANCH, Texas - Anne Sweeter Jessop puts her arms around her mother's neck and hangs on, her smile a Texas-mile wide.

She is home. Her mother is here. So are her father and three brothers. And that is all this 3-year-old cares about.

A day after a district judge gave the go-ahead for parents to reclaim their children, families are trickling back to the YFZ Ranch outside Eldorado.

Edson Jessop and his wife Zavenda Young were among the first to return. The couple were on their way to Waco to visit Ephraim, 7, and Zachery, 9, on Monday when word came they could pick up their children.

They turned the three-hour drive from Waco to Hockley into a "mad dash" to get Anne and Russell, 5 - squeezing in at seven minutes to 5, just before the shelter closed.

The workers cried as they bid goodbye to the children, Zavenda said.

The family then drove through the night and arrived here at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

It has been more two months since authorities raided the ranch amid allegations that children were physically and sexually abused there. That led the judge to remove about 450 children from their parents, all members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. But two higher courts said the judge didn't have enough evidence of abuse to keep the children from their parents at the ranch.

The events that led their families to be torn apart are too fresh, future state actions too unknown, to return to the ranch now, some parents say. While the state investigation continues, they are setting up homes elsewhere.

But Zavenda does not want to be anywhere else.

"I'm not afraid of them," she said.

What a touching story.

NOT.

Do a little reading and you will see this family is the typical disgusting polygamist family.

The Bishop's list has the father as the husband of 5 women and father of dozens of kids.

And dear Zavenda has other children that she never mentions. The were not taken in the raid so that means they do not live with her at the YFZ compound.

They must still live in Colorado City as that is where they were living in 2007.

The youngest child she abandoned is now 10. What a worthless mother.

The comments on the article have more info too. Seems like she abandoned her other kids. They have a differant father who is dead. So now they don't have any parents! What a blessing, that polygamy!

Here is the link to the Bishop's list. Page 42 has the info.

It is not the YFZ Ranch but rather the YFV Ranch.

husband of 5 women and father of dozens of kids.

Almost sounds like your typical South Chicago "family" except there are normally more women involved in the S. Chicago situation.

I do not know what went on at that ranch, it appears the LEO overstepped but I don't know. What I do know is that if my two kids were taken from me for a few weeks based on unfounded allegations it would be devastating to me and probably damaging to the children. Flame me if you wish, but unless there is evidence or specific complaints from someone these children should be with their parents.

They are still children who have done nothing wrong, being reunited with mothers who bore them, and the fathers who sired them.

But go ahead, call them "disgusting" if it makes it easier for you to ignore the fact that these are real people.

If that's the standard for Social Services to take kids, many professional athletes would lose theirs. I can't remember how many women (now former) Bronco Travis Henry had kids with. Still, this is strange behavior by a group claiming to be religious.

Yes, they are real people and supposed to enjoy the same Constitutional rights as everyone else. I agree with you. An entire community condemned on a false call. It was a horrible thing to do to those innocent children. And I have heard that the foster care system in TX stinks.

The old America was not tolerant of polygamy, and therefore this peculiar institution did not survive (above ground) at that time.

The new America tolerates everything, so this Holy and Righteous Restoration of Polygamy <\sarc> just might continue to grow like the plage that it is.

Jrochelle posted an article, then made the first comments.

Then he/she provided sources for the context of the statements.

Rather than debate the points, or counter them with your own sources, you simply personally attacked the poster.

That is against the rules on F.R.

Yesterday there was a thread, Texas grand jury may be hearing evidence against polygamous sect (FLDS), that brought up Sarah Barlow Draper. She's 37 and was held as a minor. The "Hang the LEO/Burn the CPS" gang was up in arms over this.

I'm going to repeat what I posted on that thread, which suprisingly, receievd no replies. I wonder why . . . . .

Wasn't it a Sarah, wife #? of Dale Barlow, that they were originally looking for? If so, I can understand why the authorities took a special interest in her and asked for two forms of identification. But it was my understanding that each of the minors was assigned an attorney. Didn't she have one while she was still classified as a minor?

She was originally married to Dan Barlow, the first and only mayor of Colorado City, a man 40 years her senior. When he was kicked out, she was reassigned to another husband. The current guy's absence is very telling. Maybe life as Mrs Draper wasn't too sweet. Anyway, it looks like she's getting her life together and I wish her well.

I wonder how she and the children felt when they were ripped from the arms of their real father, Dan Barlow, in 2004, on a whim of Warren Jeffs.

BTW, Dan Barlow, who is in his 70's, is illegally collecting social security benefits. His minor son, Gideon, is a "Lost Boy", yet dad claimed he still lives at home.

Another of Dan's sons, Dan, Jr., was charged with 14 counts of sexual abuse, accused of repeatedly molesting his five daughters, ages 12 to 19, over several years. He was allowed to plead guilty to a single, lesser charge of sexual abuse, and was sentenced to 120 days in jail — most of which was suspended. He served 13 days.

Dan's brother, Alvin, was the superintendent of the Colorado City Unified School District:

Until the year 2000, all of the children in Colorado City AZ attended public schools. But then the FLDS Prophet ordered the faithful to stop all contact with heathen and apostates — which meant anybody who is not FLDS. So about 650 children left the 950 student system. Even though all the church’s children left, the School Board has remained 100 percent FLDS. Remember this as you read.

Most of the remaining students were from polygamist families also, but they belonged to a smaller, dissenting group called the 2nd Warders — apostates, doomed to hellfire — who live three miles away.

This is a very poor school district, and the board never tried to build its own schools. Instead, they leased space in buildings owned by the FLDS church. After the edict in 2000, the district did not need as much space, so even though some leases were paid up for several years in advance, the board relinquished most of it. Now the church has that space for its own schools.

Every negotiation was a sweetheart deal which favored the FLDS church at the expense of the taxpayers.

Next, the school board pleaded poverty to the newly created Arizona School Facilities Board. The facilities in Colorado City were indeed bad, so in 2001 the state built them a new $6 million K-12 school, and the taxpayers paid for it.

At about the same time, Arizona launched a program to provide a financial cushion for schools in the event of a rapid decline in enrollment — something usually caused by a major employer shutting down. After the FLDS suddenly removed two-thirds of the students, the Colorado City district qualified. They have received about $1.5 million per year for the past three years under this ‘rapid decline’ program, and will for three more years — about $9 million total. So we paid again.

FLDS teachers were forbidden to teach the heathen and apostate kids, so most of them moved to the new church schools. Most other employees stayed, and the public school district remains the largest employer in the area. It still has 100 employees, for only 300 students now — an outrageously high 3 to 1 ratio.

Every student is now bussed to the new school from outlying areas. And guess what — all the school bus drivers are FLDS who kept their jobs and earn an average salary of $30,000. The teachers earn less than $20,000.

Starting with the Prophet’s edict in 2000, the FLDS have crafted a scheme that defrauds Arizona taxpayers on several levels, and it seems that nobody even realizes it. Or nobody cares. Within two years, accusations would be leveled that FLDS leaders abused the school district treasury to provide unneeded jobs, new vehicles, credit cards, school supplies and other perks to help FLDS church members support their huge polygamous families.

District School Supt. Alvin Barlow has been in his job longer than any other superintendent in the state, so he¹s knowledgeable. Incidentally, he also has four secretaries and four administrative aides. Barlow goes to state surplus property sales and gets school equipment and supplies on the cheap, then shares them with the FLDS church schools.

One of the perks of being a public school official in Colorado City is free transportation. The district owns 15 vehicles (mostly big SUVs, vans, and pickups) which are assigned to various administrators and principals who happen to be FLDS. They¹re supposedly for official business, but they get a lot of personal use with the district paying for fuel, maintenance, and insurance. Free use of a large vehicle is a great benefit for a polygamist family.

This little 300 student district also bought an airplane last year — a Cessna 210, for $220,000 — so the officials can get to meetings easier. Then they contracted with the son of the school board president to fly it for them. They were the only school district in the entire state with its own aircraft.

After several investigations and a litany of complaints, on May 9, 2005 Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano quietly signed into law a bill that allowed state education officials to take over the Colorado City Unified School District from religious leaders.

Model citizens all . . .

Apologize? I’ll do no such thing.

Do you want a real barf alert? How about this one:

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=65538

You mormon haters get your knickers all in a bunch over hypothetical crimes.

Yet, none of you — NONE of you — will grapple with the very real, proven issue of your heroes (CPS) sanctioning, at taxpayer expense, perverted butt sex with TWENTY children as young as 3 years old.

Yet you put cute li’l “barf alerts” on rather innocent stories such as this, about real loving mothers being reunited with their children. This, after a total court smackdown of your sick taxpayer-funded nazi heroes called “Child PROTECTIVE services”.

Protective? Oh really?

Barf.

Explain please? Because it about makes my head pop at your utter, disgusting “barf alert” hypocrisy.
