Three seniors at Bloomington Kennedy High School will not be allowed to walk in their graduation ceremony after driving to school with confederate flags flying from their trucks.
Seventy-five other students showed up at the school Wednesday morning to protest the action taken by the school against Justin Thompson, Joey Snyder and another student.
"I figured, you know, we’re seniors, it’s the last day of school…we didn’t mean any offense by it," Thompson said.
Added Snyder: "We didn’t look at it as racist or anything."
But school officials feel that flying a confederate flag violates the school’s student conduct policy. The students have been suspended from all school-sponsored activities.
"We are responsible for the 2,000-plus students that attend this school," said Rick Kaufman, of Bloomington Public Schools. "The very nature of what they did had the potential to create a very serious situation."
Students disagreed.
"They weren’t trying to hurt anybody, they just had it on their cars. It’s just freedom of speech" said Landin Lind, one of 75 students who chanted ‘Let Them Walk’ at the school Wednesday morning.
"I feel it was a racist move, but I feel that they were just kidding around," added student James Granberry, who supports the students. "I didn’t really take offense to it."
School officials added that they’ve dealt with some racism issues at the school recently, which is why they are taking the incident so seriously.
All three students will still receive their diplomas.
Actually Stand, as always I have checked first and lured you into another embarrassing trap just so I can laugh at how you attempt to wiggle out of it.
Please feel free to explain to us all how they don't really need to abide by the School's Code of Conduct.

One would think that after seeing three of his “posts” (more like screeds) yanked by the mods for being entirely over the top he would catch a clue and dial it down a notch.

I have never used any anti southern rhetoric in any of my posts. I have always pointed out correctly that Democrats created the Confederacy, The Confederate Flag, and The Klu Klux Klan.
If You call that anti southern rhetoric, I call it historical fact.
My stepson took a CBF with him to Iraq and tied it on a tank. LOL
I don’t want to pick a fight with you, NS, but slaves did willingly fight for the Confederacy.
But Lincoln was the first president elected in part on his opposition to the expansion of slavery into the territories.
And the Union decided it was better to die to preserve that Union than to allow fellow countrymen their independence.

slaves could not take the CSA oath of enlistment, thus they couldn't be soldiers/sailors/marines. evidently a considerable number of slaves were FREED so that they COULD serve the CSA as combatants.
btw, ALL the Black CSA servicemen/women were VOLUNTEERS. the south NEVER drafted a single Black person.

Let me make clear I support free speech, including flying the flag. I think the school's discretion here is murky. I also have my own feelings about the Confederate flag, but I'll even dismiss them just to make this point: there's no great display of Southern heritage here. These are three teenagers from Bloomington, Minnesota, the pinnacle of suburbia and home to the Mall of America. They knew it would be found offensive, and they decided to rankle some feathers.
And quote a single REAL scholar who backs your claim that there were 150,000 free blacks in the confederate army.
The picture has become clearer as the thread has progressed..
We have a wannabe skin head and his buddies flaying the flag as a last act of defiance Quite possible against a Black principal.
We have an Code of Conduct that every student was required to obey to the sake of order on school grounds.
And we have the fact that a white principal from another school that was asked to make the decision on how these three should be punished for failing to honor the school’s code of conduct and The rules rules the school board had set into place to maintain order in their district.
They may have graduated but these boys are not men they are more like spoiled brats that have found themselves hoisted on their own petard.
And now they whine about it.
When I was their age I had a neighbor who drove a beer delivery truck. He used to give us the company swag (trinkets that bore the beer label) and once, near the end of the school year, I wore a “Lucky Lager” teeshirt to school.
I did it deliberately, and for effect - just as these kids did. I knew it was out of bounds and a surefire disciplinary action in the making but I was young and dumb and full of beans.
Naturally I got a stern lecture and sent home to change my clothes. Fortunately I wasn’t as foolish as any of these kids (I wonder if any are related to swattie!) to choose the timing of my antics so as to cut myself off from something like the graduation ceremony, but if I had I would have accepted responsibility for it.
Exactly as you said, they chose a symbol knowing that it would be considered offensive and then tried to wriggle their way out of it when caught. These pups have a lot to learn...
