‘Obama used to be very comfortable speaking up for and being associated with Palestinian rights and opposing the Israeli occupation.’

Welcome to AIPAC, Senator Obama:

CARL CAMERON: Yup, there was an interview done with a Chicago pro-Palestinian activist back in January of this year. He talked about Barack Obama, and it’s the kind of thing that could give pause to some of the participants at AIPAC tomorrow. Here’s a little sampling of that:

ALI ABUNIMAH, PALESTINIAN ACTIVIST: I knew Barack Obama for many years as my state senator, when he used to attend events in the Palestinian community in Chicago all the time. I remember personally introducing him on stage in 1999 when we had a major community fundraiser for the community center in the Haitia (sp?) refugee camp in occupied West Bank. And that’s just one example of how Barack Obama used to be very comfortable speaking up for and being associated with Palestinian rights and opposing the Israeli occupation.

CAMERON: It’s worth noting that now the Palestinian activist says that Barack Obama is essentially a mainstream pro-Israel politician, but where he may have been, according to this activist at least, as recently as 1999, is something that can trouble Jewish-American voters. And Obama will be speaking with them tomorrow. He’s acknowledged he has a lot more outreach to do, and he has gone out of his way to meet with Jewish community leaders in the past.
