The Three Gorges Dam and the Earthquake in China
The China Teaching Web ^ | 6/3/2008 | Robert Vance

The lack of confidence that some of my Chinese friends seem to have in their government comes as a surprise for me. After all, it would seem that by now, Beijing should be an expert at providing assistance for displaced people. We are talking about a government that recently has completed the Three Gorges Project, the world’s largest dam, and in the process has had to relocate up to 4 million people. Many of these people, by no choice of their own, were sent to brand new cities that the Chinese government quickly constructed as the dam’s resevoir began to fill. Countless other people were forced to relocate to other provinces in China were they where supposedly given some compensation by the government to help them start their new lives.

Why is everyone so worried about what the Chinese government is going to do with the 4 million people displaced by the earthquake? After all, they are experts at displacing people and then relocating them.

The exact same thing happened here with just about every reservoir that was built, just on a smaller scale. Just about as disruptive for the people involved, however.

My own family was forced to abandon a home it had lived in for almost 100 years because the Corps of Engineers had to have a quarter mile back from high water mark, regardless of the elevation. Our home would never have flooded, it was over 100 feet above high water, but that didn't matter.

well...was it within the lakes' watershed? ....that may have been the (only good) reason.

What do you mean by watershed? The total watershed of the river is almost 8,000 square miles. They sure didn’t run everybody out from that entire area.

Watershed is when your area is mountainous or hilly: a very big i.e. geographic area collects and drains rain into very narrow ‘washes’ which are typically ravines. If you don’t build successive dams along these rainsheds, the washes will literally wash you away. If you live there.

Like New Mannford, Oklahoma? Created in the 1960's when Keystone dam was built and Lake Keystone was created.
