Yes, and one thing consistently missing from the debate is this thing called perspective.
How many laptops and iPhones and PDAs and cell phones are there in the world? Versus how many exploding batteries have there been?
Looked at in that light, these batteries are a phenomenally safe technology, with the headlines earned by a very few models by very few companies (cough-Sony-cough) which suffered manufacturing lapses.
Nothing to hide under the bed over, IMHO, much as the media loves to sensationalize these things.
