Accurate to some degree, but I think he overstates his case for effect. The environment he describes may be typical of the larger public schools (my limited experience suggests this may be true) but not of all schools, everywhere.

One would think that rural schools would be better, but our rural school with only a hundred kids per grade is nearly what he describes. The big city schools are, apparently, worse -- what he describes may be an understatement when applied to such metro schools.

If there are only a hundred kids per grade and the culture is that bad, then it’s time for you and your neighbors to vote the school board out and get some folks in there who are willing to do their job.

My own small town jr. and sr. high school experience was that it didn't make any difference. To quote "The Twilight Zone," "people are alike all over."

I don't imagine people are different at rural schools either.

Actually, the smaller schools can be in some ways worse. At least in the big schools, there's a small band of nerds to join with. In a small school (33 in grad class) I had one or two like me. I didn't really meet what I would call 'peers' till I was 15. Talk about confused...
