Besides, even [as yet] unproven rumors can gain a *lot* of traction and subliminal power in the subconscious....sometimes even more so than what is plainly seen.

Doubt and uncertainty are powerful things.

They can lay in the recesses of the mind like nasty infections....growing and festering without the benefit of concrete proof or disproof to destroy them.

“Mystery hath more power than revelation”.

Read about the Salem witch trials if you to see how much damage “whispered suspicions” can do...on a much smaller scale.
Now imagine the same kind of suspicions flying around at light speed in this “age of instant information”.

Scary.

You certainly have my imagination going. I wonder how Michelle is feeling tonight?

It would be a bombshell. If you wait too long, and let the rumor fly too long, it could lose much of the desired effect by being old news. You know, everyone has heard it already, thus lessening the desired effect.
