Fresno, CA (AP) -- The valedictorian at Fresno's Bullard High School won't be attending college in the United States this fall because he's scheduled to be deported.
Seventeen-year-old Arthur Mkoyan's 4.0 grade-point average qualified him to enter one of the state's top universities. But he and his mother have been ordered back to Armenia after their last appeal for asylum failed.
The family fled from what used to be part of the Soviet Union and has been seeking asylum since 1992.
A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement says they were given an extension until June 20

Yeah, of what year?!
March him to the border?
Sheesh. If he was a criminal and had committed a couple of rapes he’d be good to stay.
ping
Thanks for coming!
Strange considering an illegal with 4 DUI’s gets to stay and pick radishes.
Fine by me.
Don’t lump him with the illegals though. this kids family did the paperwork, but hasn’t been approved - which is our right.
Send him back but make him eligible to apply for immigration on his own, unlike those who come here illegally from the get-go, who should never get another chance.
Since we have millions to choose from, why don’t we pick some sex offender with 10 DUIs instead? I’m just sayin’... :P
Just reading the books Americans don't want ......
Can he speak English?
The man should be a natural leader back in Armenia.
He entered this country legally at age 2, been here 16 years, and would (presumably) be a great addition to our nation.
Yes, by all means, deport him post haste!
He’s lucky he isn’t being bannished to Cuba at gunpoint like Ellian.
The bureaucrats are crazy.
A gay teenager can get asylum here.
He needs to change his name to Arturo Mkoyan-Fuentes and re-enter through Mexico. Then he’s good to go.
Wonder if he could join the Army before June 20.
It says the kid is valedictorian. Why do we want to lose a winner? Who knows? With a name like Mkoyan, he might be the next great aerospace genius!
We should want to lose losers, not winners!
SF Chronicle. That's true, Armenia is a former Soviet republic. However, by 1992 the Soviet Union had disintegrated, Armenia had declared independence and was beginning its transition to a stable market-oriented democracy...the implication is that the family "fled" some sort of tyranny. There's no suggestion that they deserve political asylum in this case, and unless we want the entire world to move here, we don't do economic asylum. Sorry, take the free education and say thanks America on your way home...then reapply for citizenship as you obviously care more about being a productive citizen than many of your classmates.
Deport him i say!
We only want immigrants who cannot speak english or wear full body drapes from the 7th century.
