I feel that you do not properly appreciate Fr. Phleger's incredible ecclesiastical accomplishments. After years of study in various seminaries, in which he was exposed to classical languages, the works of the early Church Fathers, and theological nuances of every kind, he has managed, despite these handicaps, to turn himself into a funky African-American Preacher Urban Charlatan Ghetto Rabble Rouser Implied Extortionist....

just like The Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Of course, Rev. Wright had a built-in pigmentation advantage .... but not much ... and he certainly didn't have Fr. Phleger's education to hold him back.

Nah, if he's a Chicago parish priest, that means he probably went to Quigley South, or may have been one of the last graduates from Quigley North before that was closed because there weren't enough students. Chances are he learned more about Chicago-style politics than any teachings of early Church Fathers.

Which helps explain why the church kept him around; it was him or an empty set of vestments.
