I’m somewhat puzzled by the concept of the space station.

It would seem logical to put it at a very high orbit, so it would use much less fuel, then make it cumulative, so that every time someone went there, they would take another piece of the station, so that eventually it would become very large.

It might even serve to have a smaller station in lower orbit, tethered to a much larger station further out, both to save fuel and to reduce shipping costs.
