The archbishop of Chicago yesterday sharply criticized the Rev. Michael Pfleger for launching a "personal attack" on Hillary Rodham Clinton from the pulpit of Barack Obama's longtime Chicago church.
"While a priest must speak to political issues that are also moral, he may not endorse candidates nor engage in partisan campaigning," Francis Cardinal George said after Pfleger's racially tinged comments about Clinton drew outrage.
"Racial issues are both political and moral, and are also highly charged. Words can be differently interpreted, but Father Pfleger's remarks about Sen. Clinton are both partisan and amount to a personal attack. I regret that deeply."
Obama has referred to Pfleger as a spiritual adviser, and they have been friends for over 20 years.
George's harsh rebuke comes after Pfleger's ridicule - captured on video from a Sunday sermon at Trinity United Church of Christ - recalled the rants by the candidate's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Where's the IRS? Where's the demand to rescind that churches tax exempt status?
I thought you weren't allowed to engage in politicking in church.
Okay, Cardinal, when are you transferring him to a mission in Bangladesh or Beirut? I didn’t think so, coward!
He should be defrocked. End of story.
And this is the cowardice of the modern Catholic Church; the failure to hold individual priests accountable for their actions. Its too dammed bad too! I miss the pre-Vatican II days. We Catholics have suffered so many fools since then that Im surprised the Church has any credible standing in any nation.
AMEN, BROTHER.
Obviously you forgot that black churches can get away with it.
Dambit, Gumby. You're right.
I keep forgetting that for some people, if they didn't have double-standards they'd have no standards at all.
Hey. That would make a great tagline. Dibs.
you live in Albany?
My sympathies...
Most of MSM will predictably pitch Obamas resignation as putting the Trinity episode behind him.
Baloney!
His resignation doesnt tell us why Obama was a member of a church where hate thy neighbor, envy, racism, misogyny, and anti-Americanism spew from the pulpit to loud applause from the congregation.
His resignation doesnt tell us why he and his wife decided Trinity was the church in which they wanted their children to receive religious instruction.
Those questions and others are out there.
Team Obama can save the cultural and stylistic answers for John Edwards, Bill Moyers and the Times editorial board.
Tens of millions of Americans want the questions answered truthfully.
