After having some experience with imported steel, I have come to the conclusion that the word “steel” simply doesn’t translate properly into Chinese. They have something they call “steel”, but it isn’t.
Good graphic on tower cranes and the process used to raise them.

Lived in NYC for 57 years. Seen it first hand many, many times.
Second time this has happened recently. Someone didn’t learn a lesson and that will translate to huge liability although sovereign immunity will pro’ly be claimed.
So have I. I used to work at a factory making food processing equipment, and they started buying a lot of Chinese steel. Very inconsistent stuff. I've seen 4" round stock eat several band saw blades just making a cut to square up the end, and the next cut whiz through like butter.
Beyond that, there's not enough money in the world to get me up on one of those cranes. :o)
It may or may not be Chinese ‘steel’...but the company that makes it very suspect (imho) until proven otherwise.

As usual, all blame is being placed on the American inspectors at this point.
‘America’s fault’ or ‘Bush’s fault’ seems to always be the line of the American media.
It happened 2 blocks from my building, I just walked over there, unbelievable, I’ve never seen that many police and firemen in my life, horrible tragedy.
Wheeew...Stay safe
Eeegads. Unreal, eh?
I lived in NYC for several years- (when HowmIdoininEdKoch was mayor) ..still miss it. What part of town are you?

The police are making people (including the massive numbers of the media) move back 2 blocks from the scene because they’re afraid the rest of the crane might fall. Scary stuff.
Glad you are OK!!
I've been in Commercial Construction for .. uh .. (2008-1970) .. oh yeah, 38 years, in the Chicago land area and can't recall ONE crane collapsing. We did have one incident where a Tower Crane link broke when it was being raised for the next pour and caused damage to the building internally when it fell but that's it.
We were very very VERY lucky. It went straight down through 15 concrete floors (8" thick) like a hot knife through butter (from 37 to 22) yet not one worker was hurt (scared *shirtless* but not hurt).
Plus all these Cranes are *supposed* to be regularly inspected. Is somebody getting paid off maybe???? I think Bloomie should spend his energy on this 'epidemic' and not gun shops in Georgia.
Yeah, the blade probably hit an old file that didn't melt. I got some Chinese Type 303 in once. The bars were full of stringers and were bulged like pillows. I had to pre machine it (Not just true it up) all before I could use it then the stock was undersized.
The vendor made good on it, though.
Never Again.
Born and raised in Elmhurst, the rest was Woodside.

Hillary probably getting ready to hog the camera now. Shmuck will just have to wait his turn.
