If Honky Tonk Woman, Locomotive Breath, and La Grange are not 1,2,3, then it is worthless.

I once worked with a guy who was a guitarist in a rock band. I mentioned a cool guitar "riff" once, and he said: "That's not a riff, that's a LICK." He then went into this esoteric discussion about the difference, which -- with me not being a guitarist -- went right over my head.
Any FReeper guitarists who can explain the difference to me?

I would have included “Walk, Don’t Run”. Good list otherwise.

Yeah, ZZ Top could have had at least 3 or 4 riffs in here. And how did Joe Walsh's riff on "Life in the Fast Lane" get overlooked?
Sweet Home Alabama - opening intro?

Rory Gallagher - Bullfrog Blues. Alvin Lee- I’d Love to Change the World. Elmore James: Dust my Broom

There are plenty of great guitar riffs, licks and solos that are great. Among them I believe should be included is “Baby’s On Fire” by Brian Eno. Used to pump that puppy up at the farmhouse in Germany. Just one of thousands that could, should, would, be on any list...

No Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas? That's what I was thinking also. Where's Johnny Rivers Secret Agent Man? Even CCR had a good one running about 8 minutes long called Ramble Tamble. I don't like John Fogerty's politics but they could play. Oh yea a real good mixture The Traveling Wilbury's "End of the line" or "Handle with Care" great music and one of Roy's last recordings was with the Wilburys which brings up another point. Where's Pretty Woman? Roy was a R&R icon one of the greatest. No mention of Pink Floyd "Dark side of the moon" album either.

It’s good. But it is a solo, not a riff.

Any FReeper guitarists who can explain the difference to me? I think of it this way: notes are characters, licks are words, and riffs are sentences.
