CHARLESTON, S.C. - The wife of entertainer Bill Murray has filed for divorce after nearly 11 years of marriage, alleging he abused her and is addicted to marijuana and alcohol.
Jennifer Butler Murray filed divorce papers May 12 in Charleston County. She owns a home on Sullivans Island, S.C., where she lives with the couple's four children.
The complaint was first reported by The Post and Courier of Charleston. It also alleges frequent abandonment by the former "Saturday Night Live" star.
Bill Murray's attorney, John McDougall, wouldn't comment on the allegations, but said the entertainer "is deeply saddened by the breakup of his marriage."
"He and his wife made loving parents and they are committed to the best interests of their children," McDougall said.
Jennifer Murray's attorney, Robert Rosen, said he had no comment.
The couple signed a prenuptial agreement, which was filed as an exhibit with the divorce papers, before they married in 1997. As part of the agreement, both waived their right to alimony or support if the marriage broke up. However, Murray agreed to pay $7 million to his ex-wife within 60 days of a final divorce decree.
The complaint, which doesn't specify instances of Murray's alleged marijuana or alcohol use, alleges he would often leave without telling his wife and says he "travels overseas where he engages in public and private altercations and sexual liaisons."
It also alleges Murray physically abused his wife and last November "hit her in the face and then told her she was `lucky he didn't kill her.'"
The documents obtained by The Post and Courier were sealed by the court last week.
Murray, the star of movies such as "Ghostbusters," "Caddyshack" and "Groundhog Day," is a co-owner of the Charleston RiverDogs minor league baseball team.
The 57-year-old actor earned an Oscar nomination for his role in "Lost in Translation."
But that is because he is a terrible actor, isn’t it?
You mean...like "the devil made me do it?"
sarcasm
was thinking the exact same thing
Another article in the NY Post has his wife calling him a sex addict too. I can’t remember for sure, but I could swear there were rumors about him having an affair with Sofia Coppola when they made “Lost in Translation.”
Nahhh, Bill had TWO children with this gal before his FIRST wife found out about it. What goes around...
And yes, Bill does whatever the heck Bill wants. -If he feels like up and partying around Paris for a ‘while’, he just does it.
I thought he was over the ‘lifestyle’ too, but continually hear plenty about that to change my mind.
It’s too bad. I LOVED all of his stuff up til the later 90’s. Now it’s pure CRAP.
Well, he was a part of the early Saturday Night Live crew, and we know how many of them were doing drugs or abusing alcohol...or both.
Translation: I want Bill's money.
Bill was always the funniest one of the bunch. I can't understand why people think Chevy Chase is funny.
There are times that No Fault divorce can be best.
It spares everyone of most of the nasty allegations.
It is a self-induced substance that many times causes very disturbing behavior as a result of the physical, emotional and moral laxity that is causes by consuming drugs (alcohol is also a drug.)
Finding or blaming others for one's own drug use, is an escape from responsibility but most importantly a LIE that one tells oneself and others many time.
Aka: The Devil Made Me Do IT!
When you come down off your soap box come over here and join me for a drink, sounds like you need one!
“..The wife of entertainer Bill Murray has filed for divorce after nearly 11 years of marriage, alleging it’s time to cash in while he still has money...”
The documents obtained by The Post and Courier were sealed by the court last week.
Well that worked real well.
Ah, Sullivan’s Island, many happy memories from my days at The Citadel out there.....
There is an old saying that goes something like:
"No matter how hot she is, there's someone out there that is tired of her crap".
Maybe it depends on whay you mean by "sex addict." I get the feeling Bill would do just about anything if he were drunk or stoned enough, but sex doesn't look to be a driving passion in his life. It's more just part of the party. But what do I know?
The actor’s job is to make you see the character not the actor. If you are watching a movie and see the actor than he has failed in his job. Example is when Neil Patrick Harris came out of the closet a couple of years ago. He plays a hedonistic womanizer on “How I Met Your Mother”. For many people it became hard to watch a gay guy play a womanizer and thus stopped watching the show. Every time they saw him on screen they saw the gay actor not Barney Stinson.
I guess seeing is in the eye of the viewer. Not everyone thinks the same.
Agree with you. No one pours the stuff down your throat. Blaming his wife for his problems is BS. Bill, check the mirror—it may be the only thing you own that looks back at you.
No one will get control over many issues in their lives unless and until they step up, claim responsibility for their own behavior (no one "makes" you do anything, unless they are holding a loaded gun or knife at your thhroat or to a member of your family) what ever your reason is for doing what you do, you need to take responsibility, then determine that no matter why the reasons you give for doing something, it's all up to you to change.
In fact, if you do that, you will feel as though you've had a one thousand weight lifted off your shoulders.
In fact, you might even find that those around you no longer "bother" you as they did before. They may even become more likeable and yes, even lovable.
Is it hard, yes of course it is but face it, you're a grown up and LOTS of things are hard!!!!!!
