Jeep tourism in Ouray County is facing delays as the county’s road and bridge department plows through overwhelming amounts of snow on the area’s most popular trails.

“We’re still in our beginning stages,” .... The usual 10-day plowing project is already weeks behind...

In a normal year, Yankee Boy usually has 2 to 3 feet on the road and is easy to work, he said. But this is no normal year, and where the crew started plowing, the road was covered with more than 8 feet and it only got deeper.

Also hindering progress were several snowslides that haven’t run in almost a century.

“They brought down 100-year-old trees ..."

We were Elk hunting out that way several years ago, from
the other side of the ridge where we had our drop camp you
could see the lights of Ouray, they had some Christmas lighting up already and it was such a sight to see, it looked like it was a swiss village.

Yes, everyone made it to the summit. We had to climb back down. The train goes to the summit of the Jungfrau which is the next mountain after the Monch. The train tunnel goes through the Eiger and Monch. When you are far enough down to traverse the north face to get to the train tunnel gallery windows you are about 3/4 of the way down and it is easier to just continue descending.

"Never blew a differential on the back roads, yet."

It was the ice packed under the snow (and the large Goodyear MT/Rs) that broke the diff. I installed a tougher solid locker and set the gears myself (old custom machining experience). "Professional" jobs often tend to leave drivers with howling rear ends.

We sold the Bronco and don't do much four-wheeling these days. Stock jeeps with 6-cylinders can be much easier on fuel (frugal as some of the hybrids). ;-)
